ARTIFICIAL SILK
NEW ZEALAND PROSPECTS. New Zealand is stated by th© Man’chcster Guardian Commercial to provide an excellent market for artificial silk, for the consumptive power a head of population is exceedingly high, and, as a consequence, imports are on a considerable scale. During 1925 England sent to New Zealand! 75,7321 b. of yarn, while in 1920 this figure was increased to 99.7821 h. It is, however, in cotton and artif!cial silk mixtures that the moat important increase has taken place, for British exports in July this year reached 148,748 square yards, against only 98,820 square yards in June. Wh the former figure is not equal to the yardage sent in July, 1926, the total for the first seven months of 1927 vs well in excess of that for the corresponding period of 1926, and, if the same rate of progress is maintained for the remainder of the year, British exports will show an increase of nca. ly 40 per cent. The writer says:—“The possibilities of establishing an artificial silk industry in New Zealand arc enhanced by the supplies of wood pulp obtainable, anri,< it is interesting to note that t? e •development of the forests is being treated on a business-like basis. It is said that New Zealand forests will supply pulp wood within 15 years of planting, and it is also suggested that local grown flax will provide a suitable base.”
