GONVILLE SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Gonville School committee was held on Saturday evening; there were present Messrs F. Head (chairman), F. Newton (secretary), R. Barrow, R. Brookie, F. Jones, and T. Anderson. The headmaster, reported that the school roll numbered 647 with an average attendance of 594 and the highest 616, sickness being practically nil. A band demonstration and annual athletic sports are to be held on November 11 and 12 on Cook’s Gardens. The school will be fully represented, and the staff are working at full pressure to assist the various competitors. Overseas correspondence is being fostered by the education authorities with the object of giving the children more inside knowledge of the manufactures of the different cities in England and New Zealand. A total of 400 letters was received by the school.
Mr Bowater thanked Mr Head and the members of the committee on behalf of the staff and himself for the interest taken in the school generally, particularly the grounds and general appearance around the buildings. Following a general discussion on tennis, the members at the close of the meeting inspected the site of the proposed courts. As the Tennis Association has a proposal for the various committees for ways and means to encourage this sport in the schools, it can be assured of such assistance as lies in the committee’s power.
