SUMMER BLOOMS
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY DISPLAY AT DRILL HALL Treasures of Wanganui gardens were effectively displayed at the Drill Hall yesterday, when the Horticultural Society’s annual summer show was held. Unfortunately the weather was not all that could be desired, but nevertheless the exhibition was full of merit, -the blooms making a fine showing and fiiir ing all the benches. The show compares favourably wltn those of former years, but it may hero be mentioned that were it held a little later the blooms would have been evc-u better. Care had to be taken, however, that the date did not clash with the Agricultural Association’s show to be held next week. The champion bloom of the show was exhibited by Mr W. V. Portcous, or Wanganui, who exhibited a perfect specimen of the Mrs David McKee’ variety. This rich cream blossom was greatly admired. The best specimen bloom was exhibited by Mrs Raine, and was of the Duchess of Westminister variety. A feature of the show was the very creditable display made by tho novices, it being apparent that they had to make but slight progress before they would be out of the novice ranks. In the amateur classes the full blooms were very fine. Some of th J flowers most admired were the single roses. Two varieties which st.ood out in this section were Sinica Anemone and Irish Fire Flame, the former being of a delicate pink shade and the latter being adequately described by its name. Among the yellows there were also some very attractive shades. There was a novelty in a specimen of the Angele Pernet variety. It was exhibited by Mr C. H. E. Rhodes, and the variety was imported from England last year by Mr F. Mason. Outside the rose classes the most attractive displays were in the decorative section. The ladies who contribute to this portion of the show are to be congratulated on the wonderful progress made with their exhibits during recent years Mrs Faulding of Feilding may be specially mentioned. Her work is simple but very effective and she has exhibited at this show with good recompense to herself by winning a number of the prizes. There was a very fine display of irises, the principal exhibitor being Mr H. C. Edwards. Several new varieties of cacti were also exhibited by Mr Edwards, the "Candy” cactus, from which sweets are made, attracting considerable attention.
The cut-flower section filled the end of the hall, and made a bright display.
