A STORY OF THE AFRICAN VELDT [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service. J In these days of modern civilisation it is hard to realise that there are still places on the globe where a white man is in constant danger of attack from savage natives who retain that primal instinct to kill or be killed. This condition still prevails in parts of British East Africa and it is this background! that Cynthia Stockley, the noted author, has taken for her latest story, “The Claw” the screen version of which will be shown at the Marton Town Hall this evening. Mrs Stockley has woven a powerful theme around the lives of a beautiful English girl, an English army officer and the scion of a noble English family who are transplanted by the die of fate from the calm anri dignity of London to the African veldt. Claire Windsor and Norman Kerry are co-starred in the picture while tne other end of the triangle is portrayed by Arthur Edmund Carew. Sidney Olcott directed. EUCHRE PARTY The Marton Ladies’ Welfare League euchre party was well attended on Thursday evening when prizes weru won by Mrs G. Morris and Air A. Strawbridge. Consolation prizes were won by Miss Nielsen and Mr A. MeIndoe.

ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB’S DANCE The Athletic Football Club’s end-of-season dance on Thursday evening in the Druids’ Hall was well attended. The hall was nicely decorated and the floor was in excellent older. The novelty musical trio (Messrs F. Wood, G. Denbow and W. Knox) provided excellent music. Mr T. Barton preesnted the Bengal Challenge Cup and* the third grade also the following medals: Best back, (medal donated by Air Ryder), to N. Cairncross; best all-round player (med*al donated by Air R. Barlow). H. K. Saunders; best forward (medal donated by Mr J. Mahoney), E. Foster. Messrs R. Baker, N. Cairncross and •T. Windlebum acted as AC.’sC. and Mr A. Hutton (secretary) also contributed to the enjoyment of the dancers. MABTON BAND CONCERT The Marton Municipal Band win I render an open-air concert in the Mari ton Park on Sunday afternoon, commencing at 3 o’clock.
