SUTCLIFFE’S APPOINTMENT
“SUKPBISES BUT THEILLS.” FOR THE GOOD OF THE GAME. Received November 3, 10.30 p.m. (Sun). LONDON, Nov. 3. Hobbs, congratulating Sutcliffe on his appointment as captain of the Yorkshire Club, says: “I wonder why Rhodes was not asked.” Rhodes was fifty years of age last week. “Possibly my old friend Jack Hobbs will laugh and say that I’ve gone back on my opinion regarding professional captains,” said Lord Hawke, immediately after Sutcliffe’s election, “but I was talking of captains of All England, not of Yorkshire, which is a different matter. I am loyal to my committee, and I don’t dare to pass a personal opinion on the selection of a professional captain.” The committee approached Sutcliffe before sailing for South Africa.
