AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

HIS MAJESTY’S'THEATRE Irresistible humour touching pathos, and an appealing human note throughout, and all the charm that readers have found a delighi.ru: feature of Alice Hegan Rice’s books, are excellently entertaining features of “Lovey Mary,” which will be screened at His Majesty’s Theatre For the last time to-night. William Haines and Bessio Love are the principal players, Miss Love appearing in the title role. Her interpretation of a most lovable fictional character is a noteworthy achievement and Haines is convincing as her sweetheart.

Mae Murray’s story of Spain, “Valencia,” is also shown. The heroine of “The Merry Widow, “The Masked Bride” and other sensational successes plays a fiery circus gypsy enmeshed in a strange intrigue'of high society in the now picture. Lloyd Hughes play?, the leading male role and the cast includes Roy D’Arcy, Max Barwyn, Robert Anderson and other well-known screen artists. Included in the programme is a most enjoyable trained animal act. Clancy’s Dogs. These little dogs do all sorts of clever tucks and stunts, which include somersaults. The dogs will appear again to-morrow at the matinee and evening, when a complete change of picture programme will be substituted. THE GRAND THEATRE. The improvement in motion picture production within the past decade, was admirably indicated when a new Metropolitan version of “The Flame of the Yukon,” was presented at the Grand Theatre yesterday. Tho scenes, laid in the Canadian North-west during the early gold-rush days, are superbly presented. The story is good and the main incidents are intensely thrilling. Miss Owen was artistic as “The Flame,” while Mr Gray was an admirable foil in the leading man’s role. Jack McDonald as Sourdough, Matthew Betz as Black Jack Hovey and Vadim Uraneff as Solo Jim, were excellent in their portrayals. The supporting feature “Brooding Eyes” is a thrilling mystery drama featuring Lionel Barrymore and Ruth Clifford; Fox News, and Fox comedy complete a first-class entertainment. To-morrow Corinne Griffith will be the attraction in “Three Hours,” and George O’Hara will be seen in “Yours to Command. ’ ’

THE DUCHESS THEATRE Vienna before the war. Bewitching, mad Vienna, with its light-hearto/l gaiety, its capricious disregard of the conventions, its singing and its waltzes, forms the background of a charming, yet virile story. From royal pafacc, stately regal and solemn to the -wine gardens of old Vienna, where love and wine and song mingle gayly, the romance of a Princess grows in “The Waltz Drcam,” a new UFA film screening at the Duchess Theatre finally to-night. Many companies sought vainly to secure the film rights. But Oscar Strauss, composer of the music, and Hans Mueller, who wrote the book, “Nux, the Prince Consort,” felt that only a continental producer could do the theme justice. UFA, accondingly achieved the privilege of transferring it to the screen. A cast of extraordinary talent and appeal interpret the screen version of “The Waltz Dream.” Jacob Tiedtke, Mady Christians, Willy Fritsch and Xenia Desni have the principal roles. Patrons should book early to insure good seats for this fine picture.
