ON PUBLIC BODIES

FIFTY YEARS’ SERVICE PRESENTATION TO NELSON MAN. (Per Pre*! OaodaUon.) NELSON, Nov. 3. Mr Phillip Best, chairman of the Waimea County Council was to-day accorded a civic reception and presented with an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns in recognition of the city’s and district’s appreciation of his 50 years’ service on most of the public bodies. | The municipal chambers were crowdI ed. The Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt) 1 said it was his pleasant duty to welcome Mr Best to Nelson. It was certainly unique that a man so wellknown in the district should be hon- ! oured with a civic reception, but it ■ was due to Mr Best for the fine wo r k [ he had done and the long and magnii ficent service he had given to the whole 1 district. All present were Mr Best’s I friends, and they had wished to give him some token of the regard felt for him by Nelson and the surrounding districts. The Mayor asked Mr Best to accept the address, together with i an album containing the names of all i those who had subscribed to the presentation, and also a purse of sovereigns. It was not often possible, these I days, to give away a bag of sovereigns, j but the banks had made a special exception in the present instance and had allowed the gold to go out. I Further speeches were made by representatives of all public bodies.
