THE NATION’S TRANSPORT. SPECIAL COMMITTE INQUIRING (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. Reference was made by the Prime Minister (the. Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) today to the institution of preliminary enquiries into the transport systems of the country. He stated that a small Departmental sub-committee had been investigating the information at present available, but more detail as to the actual position to-day was required before the question could be reviewed as a whole. He was accordingly arranging for h compilation of the necessary facts and figures by the Public Works, Post and Telegraph, Railways and Marine Departments (the principal departments of State concerned in transport) and also the Government Statistician, who will obtain the necessary particulars as to the part played on the country’s transport by the motor vehicle. When the information is available the Prime Minister hopes to arrange for its consideration from every aspect in order to enable the Government to consider the question of transport from a national aspect. He did not wish it to be understood that the Government had any definite intentions in this connection at present —all that was at present decided was to analyse the position to the fullest possible extent, and then, after the most careful consideration, to take what steps were considered' desirable in the interests of the country as a whois.
