SATURDAY’S CONTESTS WANGANUI EAST CLUB On Saturday an interchange of rinks took place when teams from Wanganui East visited St. John’s and Gonville, a like number visiting Wanganui East. This took the place of the usual visits paid on opening days. Despite the rain in the morning the green played remarkably well and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. The following games were played:— St. John’s.—W. Upton. Olson, Goody, J. Upton 12 v. Wanganui East.— Hughes, Connell, Hollis, Wight 22. Gonville.—Gordon, Moye, Mayo, McKenzie 18 v. Wanganui East.—Streeter. Vincent, McLaren, Scrivener 17. Club games:—• Martin. Harris, Washington, Cochrane 13 v. Gow, Graham, Brittain, J oil 26. Andersen, Muir, Roberts, "Wills 23 v Cooke, Bowling, Evans. Jones 13. Moorby, Pilkington, Hutchins 16 v. McDougall. McCracken, Beckett 11. An all-day open tournament, starting at 9 a.m. will be held at Wanganui East on Labour Day. For the information of bowlers generally it is stated that the Wanganui East green is now connected- by telephone, the number being 4374. GONVILLE CLUB There was a fair muricr of members on the Gonville Club’s green on Saturday and although the greens were heavy after the morning’s rain, all present had an interesting afternoon. During the tea adjournment the president, Mr F. Symes, made a presents tion to Mr J. IL Bowater the green superintendent and caretaker. Mr Symes referred to the sterling qualities of Mr Bowater and presented him with a gold watch suitably inscribed, as a token of the regard of the members. Mr Bowater. in thanking the members for their consideration said that ho hoped before long to give them a green that would; be equal .o any in Wanganui. DURIE HILL PROPOSAL For some time and more particularly since preparations for the present bowling season became general, Durie lull enthusiasts have discussed- the formation of a club in the hill suburb. On Friday evening the question was considered at a meeting of Durie Hill residents, and a committee consisting of the Rev, W. Tye and Messrs Wight, Frethey and Ronayne was set up to canvass the area and gain the support of residents. Mr A. SayweH, of Feilding who has a thorough knowledge or nowling green construction, has reported favourably on the suggested club
