OPENING OF SEASON I SATURDAY’S BBIGHT EUHCTION GREAT FINISHES IN RACES Bright sunshine prevailed, with a slight jobble on the river near the i Town Bridge, when the official opening of the 1927-28 season was celebrated by ihe combined city and suburban clubs at the Union boat house on Saturday. A large gathering of members and friends took part in the proceedings. A great fleet of boats left in procession from the Dublin S'reet bridge, presenting a spectacular sight to the onlookers on the banks of the r.vpr. The Government cinema photographer Mr C. F. Newham, took advantage of the occasion to secure, some splendid pictures of the various events. In -declaring ihe sexswa open, Mr W. A. Veitch, M.P., stressed* the fact that Wanganui was particularly fortunate in the. facilities they possessed for the furtherance of the sport and pai-d a splendid tribute tc Major Lomas, Alf Gray and W. Sharpe, three gentlemen who had devoted a wonderful amount ! of time and energy to the game. The racing produced some remark- | ably close frnisues and- keen interest was maintained throughout. The following arc the results of the i various events:— Eliminating Roua'di Galbraith beat Syme. First Botmd Durie beat Bridges. Kruse beat Mill. E. Crotty beat Hayward. Galbraith beat Bool*on. Second Bound Kruse beat Durie Crotty beat Galbraith. Final W. Kruse defeated E. Crotty in a most exciting finish. Boih crews hopped away smartly, but Kruse soon ■held the advantage by a canvas. Nearing the finishing post Crotty put in a challenge and- gradually reduced the margin, the two crews flashing across the iinisiiing line together and* the

verdict went to Kruse by six inches. The crews in the final wrre as follows:

W. Kruse (stroke), J. Aitkin, R. Edwards, M. Coxon, 8. Stewart, B. Coxon, E. Crysell, W. Lind (bow). E. Crotty (stroke), G. Hridges, B. Doughty, R. Cutelli, 8. Cass, C. Thompson, Pleasants, J. Hobbs (bow). Mr Alf Gray acted aa starter and Mr H. W. Cooper as judge. During ihe afternoon the ladies’ committee dispensed refreshments to the visitors.
