SERIOUS CHARGES ADMITTED. [Ter Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Oct. 14. Six charges alleging assaults on girls from four to ten years were preferred against Alfred Victor Voyce, aged 30, at the Police Court this morning. Detective Russell gave evidence that accused had made statements admitting each offence, the only explanation being given was that he was under the influence of liquor. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence. MAN KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR HAMILTON. Oct. 14. A. compound, fracture of the right leg was sustained at Hamilton by an elderly man named Bernardo Quadrio when he was knocked down by a car driven by M. B. Bosie. SITTING OP ASSESSMENT COURT. WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. The Assessment Court reduced* the proved value of the Terawhiti and Te unimproved value of the Terawhiti and Te Kamaru sheep station to £4 per acre. The valuation of improvements was not altered. The previous caluation was £6 in the case of Terawhiti, whose capital value is reduced from £55,850 to £42,636. and: £6 2s tid in the case of To JECamaru, whose capital value is reduced from £37 ,500 to £28.887. NATIVES’ MOVE TO ASSERT CLAIM QTAKI, Oct 14. Natives, who claim part of the main road at th*. Otaki railway, to-day erected a fence, thus narrowing the road to a few feet and impeding vehicular traffic. Their intention is to force the Borough Council to pay for the land. The roadway at present is extremely dangerous to users of the highway, MAORI’S THROAT CUT. HAMILTON, Oct. 14. A Maori from the Kawhia district was admitted to the Waikato Hospital this morning suffering rrom a wound in his throat. His condition is fairly serious. The indications point to a case of attempted suihide. EIRE AT KAITAWA. PAHIATUA, Oct. 14. A five-roomed residence and the furniture and piano were destroyed by fire at Kaitawa. The house was occupied by Mr. A. de Malanche and owned by Mr. 8. The house was insured for £3OO in the Farmers’ Union Mutual and the furniture in the London and Lancashire for £450. The occupants had left home a short time before for an entertainment in town. A defective chimney is believed to be the cause of the lire. COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER’S ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. William Joseph Buttimore, aged 50, a commercial traveller, admitted at the Police Court that he was intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car on Wednesday evening and that ho collided, with a cyclist and- badly damaged the cycle. Two doctors stated that accused was in a state of intoxication and unfit to drive a car. Accused’s counsel asked that his client’s license would? not be cancelled as it would Interfere with his means of livelihood. Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., said that he could not make any .distinction and fined Buttimore £5O and cancelled his license for twelve months, saying that there was nothing to prevent him from applying for a license again in three months ’ time.
