A PLEASING ENTERTAINMENT [ Special ** Chronicle ” Service. ] The variety entertainment staged in the Town Hall on Friday evening last, by the local amateur “Pot Pouri Club,’’ in aid of the funds of the Whenuakura Public Hall, was undoubtedly one of the very best amateur efforts ever staged in this town. Every item on the liberal programme was a “star'* item, and the large audience showed its appreciation by unstinted applause. The organisers—Misses HalsWell and .Marian Hamerton, deserve the thanks of the public for bringing together such a capable band of artists. The programme opened with the orchestral item “Imperial.” The opening chorus, “A Truly Rural Lot,” by the company, with Miss Freda Boagey as soloist, was a good item. “Where Did You Get Those Eyes,’’ by the company, was also a pleasing item. The vocal duet, “Oh, Dry Those Tears.” by Miss Marian Hamerton and Mr F. Naismith was very nicely rendered. The quintette by Mrs Masters, Misses N. Luxton and Haswell and Messrs K. Dodds and ' Stanford was another well rendered item. This was followed by the vocal solo, “When the Flowing Tide Comes In,” by Miss Marian Hamerton, and faultlessly rendered, the singer’s line contralto voice being heard to great advantage. This met with a voiciferous demand for an encore, to which the vocalist respondexl by singing “Did I but Know,” also splendidly rendered, the quartette, “I Want to be Happy,” by Mrs Masters, Miss D. Roberts and Messrs K. Dodds and J Crawford, with chorus, and the song “Nymphs and Fawns,” by Miss Freda Boagey were excellently rendered and received wellmerited applause and encores. The I sketch, “The Parson’s Address,” by Mr Hortenburgh brought down the house and the song and Gavotte, “Court of Louis,” by the ladies of the company, and dance and tableau by Misses F. Boagey and L. Adams were pleasing items. After the overture the chorus “Barcelona” (soloist, Mr J. Crawford), with a Spanish dance by Misses F. Boagey, Marian Hamerton and L. Carey, was presented and was particularly good. Miss Haswell then sang “Carissima” in splendid style and gave * ‘ Come to the Fair ” as an encore. The humorous sketch, “The One-Man Drama,” by Mr Hortenburgh, greatly pleased and was followed by a song, “Bubbles,” by Miss Freda Boagey and chorus. Then came the gem of the programme, 11 Let’s Grow Old Together,” by Misses Marian Hamerton and Mr K. Dodds, with chorus and tableau. The singing of the soloists was good, the chorus well balanced and the tableau (by Mrs Masters and Mr Darcy Nicholls) completed a perfect setting. A portion of this item was repeated. Mr F. Naismith’s fine voice was heard to perfection in “The Bedouin’s Love .Song, ’ ’ and he had to reply to an encore. “Bye, Bye Blackbird,” by Miss Hal swell and Mr J. Crawford and chorus was another good item, and this brought the audience to. the . finale, “Ring a Ling,” the soloists being the Misses Freda Boagey, Marian Hamerton and Haswell and Mr J. Crawford with the company. The ace Dmpaniments were played by Mrs A A. Carey and the Misses Marian Hamerton (L.T.C.L.) and Jean Shield (A.T.CJu.). The dressing throughout was very neat and gave a splendid stage effect. To Mrs Masters, Mr F. Locker and their litle band of helpers behind the stage great praise is due, ror there was not a hitch, or a moment’s delay during the whole programme. Before the singing of the National Anthem, Mr C. R. Honeyfield, chairman of the Whenuakura Public Hall Committee, thanked those present for the very splendid support they had given to tre funds of the IThenuakura Hall Committee and stated that the entertainment put on that evening was beyond praise and to every member of the company he extended the gratitude of the Whenuakura residents.
