THE DAIRY WORLD

WHENUAKURA COMPANY GRADING OF MILK ADOPTED The twenty- sixth annual meeting of shareholders in the Whenuakura Co. operative Dairy Co. was held on Saturday, the ahairmau of directors, Mr W. H. Southcombe presiding over an attendance of about shareholders. The chairman in xprmally moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet said that the high production of the past season had assisted suppliers’ returns in a year of poor prices. There had been savings in shrinkage, storage, and interest as a result of produce being out of control therby 'enabling quick clearances. Of the 9538 crates of cheese graded 2748 were “finest” 6636 “first gra»ie” and 154 “second grade.” Boxes of creamery butter graded numbered 3646 of which 2615 graded “finest,” 1025 ”first,” an-d two boxes “second grade.” In addition, 12 tons (490 boxes) of whey butter had been made. The company expected to save shrinkage mounting to one per cent., through the installation of a cheesewaxing plant, and it had been decided to separate at the branch factories. The motion adopting the report was seconded by Mr F« Parsons. Suppliers referred to the increased charges of f.O.b. this year and it was pointed out that most companies had reduced their chargesTo Mr Chatterton, the secretary explained that although only £52 appeared on the accounts as the dairy instructor’s expenses, that was the only account which had come in when the accounts went to press; the total cost would be easily £ll4 and the additional amount would come out of the appropriation account this year. Mr Parsons thought the shareholders should do their best to get as many herds to supply the factory as possible and to make every endeavour to reduce the M charge down to id. Speaking of the cream supply Mr Parsons said they should do as was done in Rangitikei, send a lorry round for the cream and have it graded at ttte gate.

Mr Murphy pointed out that cream graded finest at the gate might not be rinest when the butter-maker received

Mr Boyes said the pay-out should appear on the balance sheet as the actual amount paid out as was the custom of other companies. He thought the expenses for manufacturing butter were “pretty solid.” “'You can’t compete with other countries if you are paying £d less every year,” he said? ‘ln the pay-out a supplier wants to see what he receives and not what is put to reserve.”

Mr Murphy said he had given some attention to the accounts and the secretary’s figures were correct as the actual pay-out. Mr Boyer said the accounts for cheese suppliers and butter suppliers should be kept separate. He asked if the butter had been sold this year at Is 4d. The chairman explained that butter for the months of August, September, ancl October had been sold at Is sd. Mr Boyer said! he knew of a South Island company which had disposed of its output to the end of the ysar at Is 7d. Mr Donald asked if it would be possible to use one of the branch factories exclusive for the manufacture of butter, but Mr Parsons said he did not think this would be practicable. The report and balance sheet were then adopted:. The election of directors to fill the positions vacated by Messrs F. Parsons and F. Besley, the latter not seeking re-election, resulted in Messrs Parsons and Murphy being returned, Mr J. D. G. Thomas was re-elected auditor at the same feeThe question of installing a petrol pump at the factory was considered, but was turned down on account of the cost of operating it. Some discussion ensued as to whether the dairy instructor’s services should be retained or not. On the motion of Mr W. Hotter, seconded by Mr J. Smith, it was decided to dispense with his services. Reference was made to the grading of milk as mentioned by Mr Veale in his address and it was (decided that a system of grading of milk be adopted, two grades to be instituted and a differential payment made. A vote of thanks was accorded the directors, the retiring director, Mr F. Besley, the manager (Mr G. Thorburn) and the staff, including the buttermaker who had recently left the company.

At a subsequent meeting of directors Mr F. Parsons was elected chairman. RAETIHI DAIRY COY. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the company was heJd in Ashwell’s Hall, Raetihi, when there was a large attendance of suppliers and shareholders. Mr A. Harris (chairman of directors) presided. The season’s output increased 4.72 per cent, on the previous season. This was chiefly accounted for by the weather conditions and the poorness of the butter market. During the season £16409 12s 9d was advanced on butterfat and £l2lB 2s for cream collected. The monthly advances to suppliers averaged Is Id per lb. and a bonus of l|d per lb. on all butter-fat suppiled for the season was recommended. The output of butter for the season amounted to 166 tons. Shareholders will be paid the usual 5 per cent, dividend on paid-up capital. The retail store had a successful year with a turn-over of £9912 14s Bd, showing a net profit of £371. The directors recommended a bonus of 3 per 1 eent. as a refund on purchases made by suppliers. The two retiring directors, Messrs A. B. Harris end C. Anderson, were re-electe?. for the ensuing year. After the matter of appointing a dairy inspector had been discussed, it was decided to make the appointment with a view of assisting with grading and general matters regarding dairying.
