HUNTER VILLE

FOOTBALL BALL. f Special " Chronicle ” Service. J The last ball held by the Hunterville Football Club showed a small balance on the wrong side of the book, and some were dubious about having another try, but last week-end proved that the dancing committee was still a much alive body. It was the general opinion that never in the history of the Hall, had it been decorated with more effect, and great praise is due to Mrs A. Dalzivll for the design and to the ladies’ committee for carrying it out. ' The supper tables were a picture well worth seeing and one could hardly believe that a building formerly used as a stable could bo so completely changed. The dispensing of supper was in the hands of Mesdames J. McAbel, C. J. Powell and F. J. Butement, the third grade players under the supervision of their manager (Mr W. Whyte) and the senior captain (Mr R. Simpson) made first class waiters. Music was supplied by Larkin’s Orchestra and during the first and second supper sitting, Mrs J. Klue, Misses N. Watt, N. Mair, T. Lourie, A. Butement and Mr R. Lourie, obliged with extras There were about 300 people from all parts around the district, and all spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The following footballers acted as M’sC.:—■ Messrs E. Duncan, R. Simpson, D. J. Abel, M. Ross, E. W. Donovan and A. Chisholm. The arrangement of the ball was in the capable hanss of Messrs G. Shanley and J. Powell. Mr Lindsay Bull deserves special mention for suprintending the getting of the decorations there and clearing them away afterwards. Both financially and socially the ball was a great success. FOOTBALL. DALZIEL CUP CONTEST. The lack of interest shown in Rangitikei in Cup contests was proved on Saturday when Hunterville (reds) journeyed to Rata (greens) to contest the Dalziell Cup. Neither team was at full strength. The reds, including five juniors, only had 14 players throughout the game and the greens had to make up their complement by the inclusion of one junior and three thirds, who had just finished playing a match against Old Boys. The spectators would have a hard job to’ total more than 50. The game was rather uninteresting, and the ball and ground were very heavy and greasy, making good football almost impossible. During the first half the reds had slightly the better of the game and scored a good try through Simpson, who received a splendid pass from Stewart and with one of his characteristicsprints outran all opposition and scored midway between goal and corner flag. He failed to convert, the ball not rising. Half time came with the scores: Red 3, Green 0. During this spell Halcombe received a very nasty smack on his nose and had to retire, one of the juniors taking his place. More vim was put into the play during the second spell and from the kick-off greens pressed hard and were awarded a free in an easy position, but Potaka failed to score. Greens kept up the pressure and, obtaining from a scrum, the ball was passed right across the line of backs, J. Potaka scoring near the corner flag. N. Kane was unable to convert from an awkward angle: Red 3, Greens 3.

Both teams now went all out to obtain the lead and the game became exciting. Greens had been pressing for some time when reds changed defence into attack and Simpson, obtaining well in his own half,'came to light again with another of his famous sprints and after outrunning the defence simply ran right over the young green fullback and scored underneath the bar. J. Stewart easily converted: Reds 8, Green 3. Greens now put W. Terry, who had been playing out in the field full-back, but unfortunately for them it was too late. Just before the finish a miskick by one of the rods gave Gibb a chance and he availed himself of the opportunity and scored near the corner. Pat Green was unable to convert: Red 8, Green 6. The score remained unaltered and reds won by two points. Duncan, Simpson, Shanley, Stewart, and Wood were the pick of the reds and Gibb, Tiuru J. Potaka, W. Kane, and Ashton the pick of the greens. Mr A. Henwood was referee. Third-Grade. Old Boys journeyed to Rata on Saturday and after an even and interesting game succeeded in winning by six points to five. Mr P. Rhodes was referee. Athletic thirds journeyed to Hunterville to contest the Dalziell Cup match against the local thirds. Both teams are equal in this competition and a spirited game was witnessed. First one side and then the other gained the ascendancy and the end came with bota teams going at it hammer and tongs with the score even. The teams will probably have to play another game to decide which is best, as both sides scored nine points on Saturday. Ohingaiti v. Bulls. Owing to a breakdown somewhere near Marton the Bulls team were unable to get to Ohingaiti. If this game counts as a win Ohingaiti will be leading in the Dalziell Cup competition having obtained six points in three games without having played one. THE PICTURES. On Wednesday next Mr W. Smith will present “Partners Again” at the Argyle Hall.
