The Alexander leaves to-day for the West Coast. GENERAL NEWS. The Federal Line steamer Westmoreland, en route from Liverpool to Auckland, has reported by wireless that she will arrive at Auckland to-day. The vessel is bringing genoral merchandise from West of England ports for discharge at Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. An arrival at New Plymouth on Sunday was the liner Cambridge from Lyttelton. At New Plymouth sche will take in 20,000 freight carcases for England and America, and from New Plymouth will proceed to Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, Tokomaru Bay <nd Auckland to complete. On September 2 she will leave the latter port for New York, Boston, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. F. Law ton, mate of the Holmdale, is on holiday leave. He is being relieved by Mr. C. Williams, mate of the Progress. Mr. H. Spurgeon, late chief steward of the Tamahine, is now acting in a similar capacity on the ferry steamer Maori. Mr. Joseph O’Brien, chief steward of the Maori, died in Lewisham Hospital (Christchurch) at 9.20 a.m. on Wednesday. A week ago he was overcome by a paralytic seizure, and remained unconscious until the time of his death. SAILING SHIP’S LONG PASSAGE. The American full-rigged ship Chillicothe, which had been expected at Sydney for some weeks from Portland. Oregon, was towed into the New South Wales port on the morning of August 2. Captain Borgman, the master of the ship .stated that the long voyage was caused strong gales and fierce westerly winds. The Chillicothe brought 1,390,000 feet of lumber. The Chillicothe, which is the first full-rig-ged ship to arrive at Sydney this year, and the first from the Pacific Coast for some years, is rather a striking vessel, and was built at Gia go.v 35 years ago. When launched she was known as the German ship Flotow, then Alsterkamp, then Arnold Vinen. The Chillicgthe will, after discharging her cargo, be docked for sighting, and will probably be sold for a hulk. VESSELS WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
