DASH FOR FREEDOM
ESCAPED CONVICTS’ TRIALS WRECKED IN A CANOE. Three Burman convicts who were undergoing life sentences in the Andanan Islands penal settlement were ately arrested on landing on an island tear Tavoy, Lower Burma, after an adventurous dash for freedom. Braving the severe monsoon condiaons, they started in an old sampan—i dug-out canoe—the repairing of which took ten days. They anticipated a five-days’ voyage, but were wrecked on the fifth day. They managed to land on an uninhabited island, where they existed on wild fruits and crabs. Having built a raft of bamboos, the convicts crossed to another island, where they repaired their abandoned craft. It was, however, subsequently swamped, and two of the exhausted men sat on the capsized sampan while the third swam and pushed it to land. The three were then arrested by the expectant village headman.
