OHAKUNE
FOOTBALL. I Special “ Chronicle * Service. ] There was a very fair attendance at the United-Junction match played at the Junction on Saturday last. The weather was not at all pleasant for the spectators, but nevertheless interest was very keen. Play was fairly even throughout the first spell, but United appeared in better condition during the latter spell. Neither side secured a try. The chief feature of the match was the consistency with which Junction was penalised for off-side play. This resulted in Garmonsway landing three penalty goals, while the majority of his attempts were within striking distance on each occasion. On the other hand, Adams (Junction) was also in good kicking form and in his first atlempt from a penalty the ball hit the upright and rebounded - into play, and. after having some other good but unsuccessful shots at odd times, he goaled from, another penalty on the call of time.
Both sets of forwards worked wed and were responsible for a good, clean exhibition. The Junction backs, were not up to the standard of their opponents, but nevertheless they gave a sound display under the circumstances. The United rearguard proved their ability to handle the ball w’ell on wet days, and with the exception of the occasion upon which Parrant made a “grievous” error of judgment, the light blues impressed throughout.
Parrant was sound at full-back, notwithstanding the temporary lapse quoted above, and his line kicking was of a high standardGarmonsway, Evans and McLeod were quite consistent, while Ward, Marsh and Simpson were the pick of the United pack. Adams (Junction) was the best forward on the ground, while his teim mates, Meads, Gawn and Cavanagh, were always in the limelight. In fact, Gawn was responsible for some particularly good solo efforts, and his display on Saturday bids fair to him securing high honours of the game. Of the Junction backs it may be jaid that they were all on a par, but that their failure to handle cleanly lost them manyq opportunities. Tomuri, as fullback, was finding the line in good style, but he appeared to get bustled when in a tight corner. The final score was: United 9, Junction 3. Mr W. Thomson controlled the game. Ohakune 19 v. Athletic 3. This match eventuated at Ohaknne, but the weather conditions prcvailin during the week had turned the ground into a pitiable-looking football arena. Athletic had several junior and third grade boys playing, and it is little wonder that Ohakune piled up a few poiv.ts Cameron (Athletic) and Fuller (Ohnkune) were impressive, and thoroughly earned their places in the Ruapehu team for next Saturday. Mt Crawford controlled the game. Junior Grade. The Junction-United match at Raetihi was the only junior fixture played on Saturday, and after a closely-contest-ed game the former team won by 6 points to 3. Gordon and Midgway each secured tries for Junction, while Scotty crossed the line for the losers. Mr J. Simpson refereed.
