BOOKMAKERS?
PREMISES RAIDED CHARGES AT WHANGAREI. (Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Aug. 15. As a result of a police raid made on Saturday afternoon, on the office and premises when documents were seized, Ernest Alfred Lacey appeared before a J.P. this morning, charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker and keeping a gaming house. A lady clerk was also charged with carrying on business. A remand was granted till August 29, bail being allowed, the former in £l5O and the latter £lOO. NAPIER CASES ACCUSED FINED. NAPIER, Aug. 15. As a result of a police raid on Saturday afternoon, five men appeared before the Court this morning. William Taylor and Thomas Cato Patterson were charged with frequenting a street for the purpose of betting and were fined £25 and £5O respectively, with costs, 10s. James Samuel Golding, James Basil Corless, and Frank Hammersley Bax, charged with using the premises as a common gaming house, were each fined £lO with costs 10s. All pleaded guilty. In the case of Bax, the police stated that he had two telephones and a wireless for use in racing transactions.
