WINNING OWNERS

PALMERSTON NORTH LEADS. WANGANUI’S GOOD POSITION. During the 1925-26 racing season the Hawke’s Bay sportsman, Mr A. B. Williams, owner of Rapine, Joy King, Star Stranger and other gnod ones, won £14,505 in stakes, his nearest rival being the Wanganui breeder and owner, Mr G. M. Currie, with £9145. In the season which ended on July 31 last no owner succeeded in getting anywhere near those figures, thus showing how prize-money is being cut down and the owner compelled to carry the burden of excessive taxation. At the head of the list of winning owners for the 1926-27 season is Mr R. A. McKenzie, Palmerston North, whose “bag” of £7345 represents just over half of the total put up by Mr A. B. Williams in the previous season. Those three good ones, Piuthair, Clarinda and Mireusonta, were mainly responsible for Mr McKenzie’s success. These three horses are trained at Woodville by T. Lloyd, who has been private trainer Mr McKenzie for very many years. Piuthair was the sheet anchor of the trio and her triple cup successes in a fortnight—Egmont, Taranaki and Wanganui—will stand unparalleled for a long time. A Close Second. Second on the list is Mr W. H. Gaisford, of Oringi, Dannevirke, most of the £7237 captured by him being through the medium of Commendation. Mr G. M. Currie, who races horses of his own breeding, is third with £6907 10s. As usual, the Wanganui sportsman is always well up and so, too, is Mr A. B. Williams with £6113, a sum which he has exceeded on four occasions in the past seven seasons. Wanganui Well Dp. That Wanganui has been placed well “on the map” may be gathered from the fact that, in addition to Mr Currie’s position near the top of the list, Mr G. F. Moore, Rcremoana’s owner, is thirteenth with £4085, and Mr H. M. Speed, owner of Civility, is fifteenth with £4070. Mr W. MeA. Duncan had representatives who secured £2460, and Mr L. G. Paul’s £990 was contributed by one horse, Alloway; a highly pleasing consideration. The list of the most successful winning owners is as follows: R. A. McKenzie, Palmerston N. 7345 W. H. Gaisford.
