MENTALLY DEPRESSED INQUEST HELD ON GROCEE. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 15. At the inquest to-day on Arthur Longbottom, a grocer, aged 54, of Petone, evidence was given that deceased had been in ill-headth for some time, and had been depressed. On August 2 he was found in a bathroom with his throat cut, and was removed to hospital, where he made good progress until bronchial pneumonia supervened. The verdict was that deceased died from this, following wounds in the throat, self-inflicted while mentally depressed. SHOOTING FATALITY EABMHAND’S DEATH. HAMILTON, August 15. There was a fatal shooting accident on Sunday at Rotorangi, when a farmhand named Robert Henry Smith, aged 24, was accidentally shot by a sporting gun. He was out shooting duck with his cousin. Smith was climbing a bank when the gun discharged. The injured man was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died the same evening. He arrived from Ireland last year. BACK FROM EUROPE BISHOP CLEARY’S TRAVELS. AUCKLAND, Aug. 15. Bishop Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, returned by the liner Aorangi after being abroad for five months. When in Ireland he secured seven young priests for New Zealand and they will arrive before Christmas. He says that Italy seems very prosperous, with apparently no unemployment there. There was an air of prosperity and happiness about Ireland. SUDDEN COLLAPSE MAN RUN OVER BY CAR CARTERTON, Aug. 13. David Alexander, aged 67, when walking along a road at Martinborough on Saturday at 7 p.m., suddenly collapsed and fell. A car driven by W. King, approaching the spot in the dark, did not notice the old man till the wheels went over him. Deceased had been in feeble health for some time past. GREATER AUCKLAND AVONDALE AMALGAMATES. AUCKLAND, Aug. 15. The Avondale Borough, with a population of over 5000 and a rateable unimproved value of £471,000, has decided to join Auckland City by 1260 votes to 553.
