INCREASING

GERMAN REPUBLICANS SHOWING THE FLAG. (A. & N.Z.) BERLIN, Aug. 11. President von Hindenburg attended the Reichstag’s celebration of the Republican Constitution. The Chancellor said: “Many sections previously apathetic or hostile are now showing appreciation of Republicanism. A significant symptom is the increasing frankness in displaying the Republican flag. The Prussian Government and Berlin municipality this year have encouraged citizens by ordering the omnibus and tramcars to fly the Republican colours, which even the Potsdam public buildings hoisted for the first time, though the burgomaster declared it was illegal to issue an order to fly them. But the most notable development is the freer display in residential quarters and holiday resorts. There are more Republican flags and fewer timid Republicans.”
