What is likely to prove one of the most bitter and intense struggles ever entered upon by competitive British shipping companes began recently. A London paper says: "The whole of the trade between Great Britain and the Continent and South African ports is involved, and already there are indications that the fight, a freight rates war, may spread to maritime traffic for other ports of the world. The competition on the South African trade has been caused by the formation of the British and Continental South African Line, of which Sir Robert Thomas, M.P., s the head, _ and which will use the Cambrian fleet of liners to maintain a monthly service. "It became known some months ago to the other shipping companies, which have gn arrangement in regard to freight charges, that the new line was to begin operations on June 25, and was to offer substantially reduced rates for certain classes of cargo. They accepted the challenge by reducing their rates, the general average being about 50 per cent. In some classes of goods the drop is much bigger—iron standards .for instance, in which there is a big trade with South Africa, being reduced from 27s 6d to 5s per ton, and galvanised iron from 50s to 10s per ton. "As one side has intimated a reduction for one class of goods, the other has responded with further and wider cuts until practically all cargoes are now affected. The latest move by the new company has been to offer contracts for five years at the reduced rates.’’
