POLICE PATROLS
A USEFUL SYSTEM NEEDED IN TARANAKI. ELTHAM, August 8. A most important point was discussed at the monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association at Eltham. It was introduced by the secretary (Mr. W. G. Walkley), who urged the need of a system uf motor-cycle police patrols to supervise the traffic on the roads outside the town and suburban areas where many evasions of the bylaws occurred, such a» driving with only one light, with no tail light, sometimes with no light at all, and also where wandering stock was a nuisance and a danger. Mr. Walkley strongly urged'the need for more effective supervision, and said that this could be done only by *a swifter service such as would be provided by the use of motor-cycles. Mr. Tristram said there was need of more control even in the towns. Mr. Walkley instanced a case of a Hawera motorist who, through no fault of his own, collided with a cow and sustained much damage. j Other members gave specific in- | stances of serious damage done in similar ways, and as the outcome of the discussion it was resolved to get the North (island Union to bring the matter bc|forc the Government with a view to the establishment of such motor police • patrols.
