WRECKED ON FIJIAN REEF

A FOBMEB AUCKLAND TRADER. [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service. ] AUCKLAND, August 8. The Suva correspondent of the N.Z. Herald, writing on July 29, states: “The auxiliary schooner Greyhound was wrecked on a reef about 12 miles from Suva last Tuesday night. In spite of hopes of refloating, she has been abandoned to the underwriters, Morris Hedstrom Ltd., who, it is understood, have partly reinsured the hull with the Pacific Company. The Greyhound is the property of the Fiji Shipping Company, and was one of the most popular vessels iu the island trade, being a fine sea boat and most comfortable to travel in. She was coming to Suva with a cargo of 75 tons of copra intended to be shipped by the Sierra to San Francisco. She ran on co the reef ou Tuesday night at Nasaota, between Naselai light and Suva. “The passengers were safely got into a launch and brought to Suva, but so far the cargo is on board and as the vessel is full of water is soaked with sea water.

H.M.S. Laburnum went round to the scene on Wednesday night in the hope that the Greyhound might be refloated, ! but it was found thajfwthe seas had ;• thrown her well up on Tne reef, and that she had a big hole in her bottom. The warship then returned to port. They Greyhound, mi auxiliary schooner of 108 tons, was formerly well known in Auckland waters. She was built by Messrs Lane and Sons at | Whangarci in 1899, and for some years was owned by Captain Subritzky, of Auckland, who employed her in the Hokianga trade. She was afterwards 1 sold to the Northern Steamship Cora- i’ pany, who continued to use the vessel p on tho Hokianga run. Subsequently / the Greyhound was purchased by the I Fiji Shipping Company. She was eqaip , ped with a 60-horse-power oil engine.
