A NEW ERA
PASSING OF ROAD BOARDS SMALL COUNTY AREAS CANNOT AFFORD ENGINEERS “It seems to me that the day of road loans has passed” said the chairman of the Waitotara County Council (Mr W. Morrison) at the monthly meeting of that body yesteday when a letter was received from the Waimea County Council asking support to a move to amend the Counties Act to give effect to a resolution passed unanimously by the New Zealand Counties Conference raising the minimum of the ratable capital value of road board districts under which steps could be taken for their abolition. The chairman said he had heard tho Minister say that he did not care to carry out inspections in districts which did not have the services of a competent engineer as he experienced great difficulty in obtaining necessary data. The chairman said that this position arose when counties were so small and* poor that a competent engineer could not be afforded. The Council decided to approve of the Waimea Council’s request.
