STUDENTS’ RUGBY

TE AUTE DEFEATED Wanganui Technical College Outclasses Hawke’s Bay Team VISITORS’ FINAL RALLY Before upwards of 1800 spectators the Wanganui Technical College first fifteen yesterday defeated Te Aute by 27 points to 6. The game was played on a greasy ground and a strong diagonal wind affected the trend of play to a certain extent, but four spells of twenty minutes each made sure that neither team was unduly penalised as a result of the unfavourable elements. In the first spell Te Aute were outclassed in both back and forward divisions and before half-time was sounded the home team had piled on twentyone points without Te Aute scoring. The visiting backs were too slow in attacking movements and their tackling was weak. The second spell opened in favour of Wanganui, but the Te Aute pack seemed suddenly inspired and with determined dash ran all over Technical, their efforts ending in two tries being scored, much to the delight of the large crowd present. On the run of play, however, the home team was much superior to the visitors. Faulty handling in the fiveeighths line several times handicapped the Technical team in its attacking movements, The teams were as follows:

Technical College. Hair Welsh Tilley Weir Kerr (Ist) Dovi (2nd) Irwin Knight (wing-forward) Powell Farley Fowler Edward Michie Rogers Tasker (hookers) Te Aute College Kingi Awaran Prebble Ruru Hamiora (Ist) O. Piper (2nd) Wickliffe J. Green (wing-forward) R. S. Collier Kerotane Te Kawa Himona ' Tinirau Bristowe Awatere Early in the Lead. Technical initiated an attack immediately following the kick-off and the game swung into Te Ante’s territory. Irwin, Kerr and Dovi handled in turn but Te Ante’s defence was sound and the lino Held. Te Aute were penalised and Edwards made no mistake with the kick.—Technical 3; Te Aute 0. From, a scrum in the visitors’ twentyfive Wanganui hooked the ball to Irwin, to Kerr, to Dovi, whb was smothered. Technical forwards rallied round and kept the visitors moving to defend. From a scrum Irwin let Welsh away to score. Edward converted.—Technical 8; Te Aute 0. Te Aute forwards showed up in a dribbling rush, carrying play to the home team’s line. Welsh clearel with a kick to touch. Irwin let his backs away again but a forward pass pulled the game up and Technical were penalised for an infringement in the seru’Z. Wickliffe missed, the kick failing to allow for the wind. The home forwards asserted themselves and dribbled past the inside backs, and the home rearguard, handling in great style, made several attempts to get through, but Green, Wickliffe and Hamiora put up a game defence. Not to be denied, Technical maintained the pressure and Irwin securing from tight play, transferred smartly to Dovi, to Tilley, to Welsh, who scored. Edward added the major points—Technical 13; Te Aute 0. The visitors appeared to fade away and the home forwards fed their rearguard time after time, but faulty handling by Dovi nullified most attempts. A scrum just on Te Aute’s side of half-way gave Irwin the ball. Ho smartly transferred to Kerr, who ran strongly, beating two defenders to score. The kick failed.—Technical 16; Te Aute 9.

Wanganui’s Superiority. The home backs continued to show their superiority and Kingi, at fullback for Te Aute, was called upon to defend strenuously. Again Irwin sent Technical’s rearguard away, to Kerr, to Tilley, who cut in to score. Edward converted.—Technical 21; Te Aute 0. The play continued with the home team attacking and half-time came without alteration: — Technical 21 Te Aute 0 Technical began strongly in the second half but Prebble, who replaced Kingi (injured) at full-back, played a sterling game and repeatedly sent the attackers back with Jong, welljudged line kicks. Technical set up a fast attack and from tight play Kerr passed to Tilley, who sold the dummy effectively on three occasions and ran in to score. The kick failed to rise.— Technical 24; Te Aute 0. That try seemed to be the signal for Te Aute to liven up in their forwards. Keeping the ball tight they packed solidly and literally pushed the blue defenders off their feet. Try as they might Technical could not lift that determined pressure, and when Bristow gathered in near the corner flag and hurled himself across excitement became intense. Te Kawa’s kick fell short. —Technical 24; Te Aute 3.

not desirable at Riccarton. With a stand up he seems to be likely to run forward. Summing Up. /However, they all cannot win and so even to the exclusion of another good sort of Northerner, Peter Maxwell, and the hope of the South, Charlatan, it looks like history as reflected in the result of the Great Northern repeatng itself: Beau Cavalier, Maunga, and Kawini.

Visitors Dominate Latter Stages. The crowd cheered Te Ante on, and their forwards continued to dominate the play. Wickliffe, Gemmell, Piper, Hamiora and Ruru handled in turn, but Welsh, playing at full-back in place of Hair (on the right wing), tackled well, and a promising movement ended with the ball in touch. The home forwards rallied gamely and play shifted into the visitors’ twenty-five. Irwin let Kerr away, to cut in and pass to Dovi, to Kerr, to Weir, in-field again to Tilley, who completed a fast movement by scoring well out. The kick failed. —Technical 27; Te Aute 3. Further excitement on the touch-line seemed to spur the visitors on. The pack, working like demons, kept the home backs moving to defend. From tight play Green secured, beat two men and transferred to Awarau who shook off a tackle to score. Another kick missed.—Technical 27; Te Aute 6. Battling hard the visiting forwards made strenuous efforts to add to their account, but the home vanguard stuck it out gamely and sound tackling by the inside backs kept the line intact. Green, Wickliffe, Gemmell, Piper and Hamiora figured often in attempts to get through. Repeated long kicks by the home backs failed to bring relief and Prebble, whose fielding was always clean, returned them time and again, showing greater judgment in finding touch. .The game ended with the visiting team still battling and the score:— TECHNICAL 27 TE AUTE 6 Mr J. S. King was referee.
