“THE NIGGER IN THE WOOD PILE”
Sir.—At Tuesday night’s meeting of the City Council, the Mayor sounded a cautious note when he suggested to the Council that they should watch for "the nigger in the wood pile” in connection with relief to Wanganui East properties from flooding. It would bo interesting to know who holds the property referred to. Further, who organised the tour of inspection of tho area on Monday? Bringing down a report on the matter from the Works Committee after a private inspection of the district, without even the Mayor being asked to attend, does not seem quite tho right thing, and I agree with the Mayor on the action he took in placing his position before the meeting. On the face of it it certainly looks as if there is a “nigger” somewhere. MORE LIGHT June 15.
