HOCKEY [ Special “ Chronicle ” Service. ] The management committee of tho Taihape Hockey Association met on 1 Monday evening. It was decided to sen-d men’s and ladies’ representative teams to Taiunarunui on June 29. It was resolved to enter a challenge for the Winter Shield, a trophy open for competition amongst the following associations: —Taihape, Taranaki, Manawatu, Feikling, Wanganui and Dannevirke. Manawatu arc at present holders of the shield which will be competed for on July 20. Last year Taihape entered a team and were beaten by Manawatu by 2 goals to 1. Huia, at 3.15 p.m. FUNERAL The exceptionally large attendance at the funeral of the late John Roy Mills, which took place on Monday, testified to the esteem in which lieccascd< was held. People were present from all parts of the district and Tiriraukawa, where the late Mr Mills was so well and favourably known, was particularly well represented. The cortege of over 40 cars left St. Margaret’s Church for the Taihape cemetery where the service was conducted by the Rev. E. J. Rich. Many beautiful wreaths were sent. The pall bearers were Messrs C. McCarthy, P. Devane, L. Brooky and D. Thurston. The chief mourners were: Mr and Mrs Robert Mills, Mrs A. Mills, Mr J. Devlin, senr., an»3 Mr J. Devlin, junr. ; J .. SUB-UNION AFFAIRS A meeting of the Taihape Rugby Sub-Union was held on Monday evening when there were present Messrs J. Quirk (chair), H Hakopa, W. Howens, E. Loader, P. Etevcneaux, C. E. Kelly and the secretary (Mr F. M. Marlow). The following were reclassified from senior to junior: J. Sharp (Hautapu Club), W. Foley (Old Boys Club). The following were registered: D. Von Sturmer (Hautapu junior), M. Davis (Huias), J. McCarthy (Old Boys junior), C. Murphy (Pirate seniors), M. Powell (Pirate juniors). Ladies’ Golf Notes Last week’s competition was played under match rules on handicaps, which proved to be most popular. The results were as follows:—Mrs McKenzie beat Miss McCormick, 5 and 4; Mrs Wakeman beat Mrs Armstrong 2 and 1; Mrs Arthur beat Miss Cleary 3 and 2; Airs Neagle beat Mrs Conder, 5 and 4; Mrs O ’Callaghan beat Miss Sexton 2 up; Miss Dickenson beat Miss Wilson 4 and 2; Miss Arthur beat Miss O’Callaghan 4 and 3; Airs Nicholls beat Airs Leighton. 2 up. The first round of the eclectic match for Mrs Hintz’s trophy will be played this week. Conditions arc three consecutive rounds of nine holes each, medal play on half handicaps.
