TURAKINA DEVIATION

NEW BRIDGE COMPLETED ELIMINATING A DANGEROUS CROSSING As a further step towards eliminating a dangerous crossing at Turakina, work on the new railway bridge which comprises an important part of the undertaking, was recently brought to completion. Speaking with a “Chronicle” man on Saturday, Mr H. W Beasley, district railway engineer, pointed out that the work was not so much of a deviation of the railway as a deviation of the road. Operations on the bridge occupied about three months. The curves had been eased, said Mr Beasiey, and the overbridge was contructed to asist the Wanganui County Council and Main Highways Board in their efforts to remove a particularly bad crossing. While the railway work had reached completion, operations on the new road deviation were still proceeding. The Main Highways Board is to rebuild the bridge over the Turakina River. More Dangerous at Present Mr Beasley emphasised the fact that ihe crossing at present in use was even more dangerous than before. The view ot motorists of the trains coming from the South was now seriously obscured owing to the new bridge and the earth thrown up in the construction of the new road. It was in the interests of motorists, said Mr Beasley, that the road should be quickly completed. The new railway bridge ’is of concrete, with steel joints encased in concrete It is the same type of bridge as will probably be built over the proposed Ridgway Street crossing in Wanganui.
