BOOKMAKERS?
ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE ASHBURTON PREMISES RAIDED [Per Press Association.] ASHBURTON, June 11. As the result of a police raid on June 3, Timothy Kissane was charged with using certain premises as a common gaming house, Basil Muller was charged with assisting in conducting the business or occupation of a bookmaker. Muller pleaded guilty to the first charge, and the second was withdrawn. A fine of £5O and costs 10s was imposed, a month being allowed for payment. James Griffey and Archibald McNeill were each fined £2 10s and 10s costs for being on the premises. The case against Kissane, who pleaded not guilty, was adjourned, bail being allowed of £lOO and one surety for a similar amount.
NOT FAIR WAGERING INSULT TO SPORTSMEN “NOT BOOKMAKERS BUT PARASITES” (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Juno 11. In convicting and ordering James Rodden to come up for sentence on a charge of bookmaking, the Magistrate, Mr H. W. Bundle, said:— “To call these people bookmakers or sportsmen is absolutely a wrong term. It is an insult to the word sportsman, for they are absolute parasites, with no idea of sport, the sporting instinct, or even of fair wagering,”
