CONSCRIPTION
A HATED WORD Empire Service League Discusses Wartime Resources PROPOSAL DEFEATED. [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.] (A. and N.Z.) LONDON, June 10. The Empire Service League discussed a proposal to recommend its branches to press for legislation in the event of war providing for the conscription of property, persons, lives, and liberty of all citizens. The Ceylon delegate said that Britishers would not look at anything labelled conscription. Ho advocated that the income and person of every citizen be taken for the service of the State at military rates of pay. If a man did not want to work at home on private’s pay he could go to the front, where Tommy Atkins would deal effectively with him. Mr Fraser East said that Australia had twice rejected conscription at referendums, but supported the idea of the whole of the nation’s resources in being at the Government’s disposal in time of war, each community deciding the best method of doing it. The proposal was defeated on the ground that it was too political in character. •
