OHAKUNE
FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. [ Special *' Chronicle ” Service. ] The monthly meeting of the Ohakune branch of the Farmers’ Uniorf above was held in tho old Council Chambers, Mr G. J. Goldfinch presiding over a fair attendance. A letter was received from the Instructor in Agriculture, Wanganui, stating that the Department was considering the advisability of running a travelling farm school along thc Main Trunk in July, thc idea being that a day and evening would be spent in each centre and that four or five lectures on subjects interesting to farmers, would be delivered by Departmental experts each centre. It would be necessary Idt some local organisation to do a bit cf propoganda work in the district to make the thing known. Mr Fetzer said this was a chance the farmers of this district should not miss. At the present, thc Department was carrying out a series of experiments on top-dressing at Mr Goldfinch’s farm, which he felt sure was going to supply some very interesting facts. He thought for the sake of the farmers themselves this scheme should be given every encouragement. Mr Goldfinch said that he felt sure thc department was out to do its very best for thc farmer, but the big drawback these days was to get thc farmers to attend such meetings. Times were hard and it was hard for farmers to get away from their farms. Sometimes, however, successful farming was got mostly from, scientific methods and it would be even more so in thc future. Therefore, he hoped that if thc Department put this scheme into working order, the farmers of this district would roll up in large numbers.
It was decided that the secretary write to thc Department of Agriculture, Wanganui, stating that this branch will do its utmost to help the scheme, should it be put into operation; also that if the Department fixed on a date for the visit, arrangements should be left in tho hands of thc secretary and the chairman.
TOWN PLANNING, Thc direction of town planning (Mr R. B. Hammond), visited Ohakune, on his way south, and attended at tho Council Chambers for the purpose of discussing matters in connection with
the new Town Planning Act. Members of the Raetihi Borough Council were present at the invitation, of thc local Council. SCHOOL GROUND. At the last meeting of the Ohakune School Committee, it was resolved that the committee meet on Thursday next, June 16, for thc purpose of mapping out a scheme for improving school grounds and that those who could not attend on that day, should do so on thc following Saturday. This was decided upon with much forethought on behalf of the committee, who considered that as the public has supplied the funds, they should express an opinion as to the way the money should be spent. It now behoves thc public to attend, for they may be able to help considerably. SCHOOL CARNIVAL. The final meeting of thc Executive Committee of the combined school carnival was held in the public school on Thursday. Tho balance-sheet showed a very satisfactory state of affairs, the result of thc recent carnival. The receipts were as follows: —Children’s fancy dress ball £l3 7s Bd, Town Committee £173 15s 3d, Junction Committee £2Ol 17s lOd, coronation ball £l5 6s lOd, total £404 7s 7d. Total expenditure £29 7s 7d leaving a balance of £375. One third of this amount will go to the Convent School and thc balance £250 to thc public school.
