Long did most of the fighting until the final stages. DOMINION BOUTS NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “The Marquis.”) A Tragic Sequel. Widespread regret in the Dominion will be felt over the death of that game and clever boxer, Roy Overend. whose bout with Tommy Griffiths at Napier on Wednesday terminated fatally for the man. One of the most promising fighters in the country, he gave every indication of turning out a top-notcher, and to be cut off in the prime of life is indeed tragic.

A credit to the game, both in and out of the ring, his conduct beyond blemish, the ring is indeed poorer for his loss, and the sympthy of the sporting fraternity of New Zealand will go out to his parents and relatives. An Apparent Weakness. The writer is of opinion that Overend must have suffered from a head complaint for some time, as he did not receive any heavy blow from contact with the canvas. • It may be reclled that Dencio, one of the most brilliant fighters that ever came to Australia, suffered from this malady, and often during his big bouts he would collapse without any apparent reason. The majority of tin* Australian public were inclined to think that he had a yellow streak, and it was only after his contest with Bort McCarthy in Melbourne, when he collapsed and died that the doctors discovered that ho suffered from haemorrhage of the brain. An Unpopular Decision. The verdict in the Maddox-Gunn fight at Napier the other evening met with a very hostile reception from the public, and it was the unanimous opinion that Maddox was handed a very raw deal. Not being present at the contest, the writer is unable to give his verdict, but Gunn must have staged a great fight to be able to get out of it with a draw. He has been fighting for a long time now, and although his claims have been pushed and lauded by the Timaru people, I always held that, although a game fighter, he was never up to championship class.
