COMBINEDJJNIVERSITIES MATCH WITH NEW SOUTH WALES WIN FOR THE HOME TEAM STUDENTS’ PLAY LACKS FINISH The combined Sydney and. New Zealand Universities’ team was defeated on Saturday by the New South Wales team by 28 points to 11. Received May 22, 5.5 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) SYDNEY, Alay 22. In the match between the combine‘d Sydney and New Zealand Universities and New South Wales the students were not playing up to their usual form. Their play lacked finish and passing rushes went straight across the ground. Webb and Freeman, on tho ’Varsity wings, seemed unable to get going. Ross, the New Zealander, went on at five-eighths at the last moment. New South Wales, on the other hand, were in good form. Pratt, behind the scrum, was ably supported by Lawton and these two initiated many likely movements, some of which, however, were spoiled by off-side play at tho critical moment. A Tower of Strength. A. Ross, the Sydney University fullback, played an excellent game and was a tower of strength to his side. His line kicking was a feature of tho game. Now South Wales handled the ball well and their passing rushes always gained ground. The scores at half-time were: New South Wales 12 i Combined ’Varsities 3 Palmer and Ford scored tries, neither of which was converted, and Lawton kicked two penalty goals for New South AVales, while Ross kicked a goal for the Universities. A Trip to England? The students’ play improved somewhat in the second spell, but they were unable to make much headway against the dash and initiative of the ’Welshmen who, with thoughts of the trip to England always before them, played their hardest. Wallace showed up prominently and in some individual dashes displayed great pace. Dunne and Alley were hard workers in the students’ van. Towers and Bowers, the New South Wales wing men, made some jinky runs. Both possess great pace. The University play was very disappointing. The final scores were: New South Wales 28 Combined ’Varsities 11 The scorers for New South Wales in the second spell were Pratt, Palmer, Towers and Bowers, Lawton converting two, while for the Universities Freeman got a try which A. Ross converted, and Dunne kicked a penalty goal. SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR SPRINGBOKS’ PROPOSALS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO NEW ZEALAND (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON, May 21. The anxiously-awaited} letter from the South African Rugby Union, giving detailed proposals for the All Blacks tour of South Africa in 1928, has just reached Wellington ami} it is clear that the New Zealand Union is not at all satisfied with the suggestions made. Full details will not be made public until next week, but it is understood that South Africa is asking that the team should sail from Sydney on the Anchises, which leaves the New South Wales port oh Alay 14, which means that the selection and assembly of the All Blacks will have to be made when the 1928 season has barely begun. Other proposals as to the number of matches and the number of players to be taken are not viewed favourably and will have to be the subject of negotiation. CHAMPIONS DEFEATED CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITION [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Alay 21. In the Rugby Union senior competition to-day the two undefeated teams met, Christchurch defeating Old Boys, last year’s champions, by 8 points to 3. SATURDAY’S PRACTICE MANY PLAYERS TURN OUT There was a good assemblage of players on the Technical College ground on Saturday, when members of the Wanganui and Old Boys and Technical Old Boys clubs took part in a practice. Conditions were fairly favourable, although a strong cross-wind proved disconcerting. General work was gone through and a good afternoon’s play was the result. QUEEN’S PARK CLUB All members of the Queen’s Park Club are requested to attend practice at the Spriggons Park training shed at 7.15 to-night.
