JUMPING THRILLS AND SPILLS

WANGANUI MEETING CONCLUDES Ardath’s Fatal Fall in Hurdles —Brigadier Bill Crashes Labour Morn Also Despatched—Civility and Oration Win the “Double.” (By “KESTREL.”) The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting concluded on Saturday in fine weather, though a light shower fell before the concluding event. That there are often “dead ’uns” on Dominion racecourses has been frequently asserted, but on Saturday there were, as one patron of the “sport of kings’ * expressed it, some “fair dinkum” dead ’uns. In the May Hurdles. Ardath crashed and had to be destroyed as a result of injuries received, and in the Grandstand Steeples Labour Morn injured a foreleg so badly that he also had to be despatched. As Peter Bosa, on Thursday, and Hallowmorn, who was destroyed on Friday, were other casualties at tne meeting, the racing authorities may be expected to institute a searching inquiry.

GRANDSTAND STEEPLECHASE PETER MAXWELL’S WIN JEMPIRE HANDICAP TO CIVILITY. WINTER OATS FOR ORATION. That better weather could not have been wished for ’was the consensus of opinion in regard to condiitons for the concluding uay of the meeting and there was a large crowd in attendance. The track was in perfect order—the open sprint was run in Imin. 13 4-ssec., three-fifths of a second faster than the Borough Handicap on Thursday—and all the appointluents were practically perfection. The totalisator reflected the tenEency for a decrease, the turnover being £29,263, a drop of £7609 10s compart, i with last year’s £36,872 lUs. .'or two days £52,588 10s was .i ir.divd, compared with £63.307 10s on iii ;wo -lays in 1926, a total decrease £10,719. As the gate takings showed a substantial drop, it is expected that the meeting will result in a loss. The Wanganui Garrison Band prov i b-d its usual first-class musical programme, which was much appreciated. Once again winners were well concealed. not one favourite getting home first, a fact which spoke volumes for Mr H. Coyle’s handicapping, while the numbers were always promptly hoisted above the judge’s box by Air W. P. Russell. The operation of the starting lever by Air C. O’Connor, and the efficiency of the clerical staff, presided over by Air W. Hall and his assistant, Mr D. R. Robbins, were other features of the meeting. Though there were a number of falls only two had serious results for the riders concerned. F. Corlett, rider of Brigadier Bill in the May Hurdles, was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital suffering from concussion, as was Al. Conway, who also sustained concussion when Lady Spalpeen threw her rider on his head when she crashed at the hencoop in the Grandstand Steeplechase. Both horsemen are, it was ascertained last evening, making satisfactory progress. A description of the racing and details of the fields follow: — Consistent Paitonu Again. The ten acceptors lined up for the Balgownie Hack Handicap, with which proceedings commenced, and apparently a decided improvement was expected of Rowley who carried £562, Capitulation £513 10s, Paitonu £4BB and Partaga £452. They were let go to a fine i despatch and it was not till they had ( gone about a furlong that Toapiti and ' Acred showed out in front of Henna, Partaga, Rowley, Romantic, Paitonu, Bisox, Lieutenant Bill and Capitulation, and in this order they ran out of the straight. At the half-mile Partaga and Paitonu were in the lead from Acred, Toapaiti. Rowley, Henna and Capitulation. Going to the front with great dash, Paitonu led into the straight from CapituHion, Acred, Partaga. Romantic. Lieutenant Bill. Rowley and Toapaiti. Nothing had a chance with Paitonu in the run to the judge and he won with ease by two and a-half lengths from Partaga, who got up to beat the rank outsider, Romantic, by half a length. Next to finish were Henna. Acred. Row ley, Lieutenant Bill, Bisox, Capitulation and Toapiti. Mount Marta Improves. When the machine closed for invest-! ments in the Rata Hack Hurdles £5O i separated Enare, San Pedro and Troilus in that order, and there was a drop of £250 to Peshwa and Mount Marta. Attractive, Troilus, Peshwa, Mount Marta and Ruby Red was the early order but when they raced past the stands Mount Marta had assumed the lead, followed by Ruby Red, Attractive, Peshwa, Troilus, Lady Acre. Enare, San Pedro, Gardant and Asleep, with Whetuhine well back. Mount Afarta increased his lead at the five furlongs, being two lengths ahead of Attractive, Peshwa. Enare, Asleep, Troilus and San Pedro. As they swung round the bend, Mount Marta was three lengths ahead of Enare, with Asleep, Troilus. San Pedro, Attractive and Peshwa following, and in the run home the Mountain Knight gelding held his own to win by three lengths. San Pedro was two lengths away in third place and Asleep, Troilu«y Peshwa, Attractive, Lady Acre, Gauntlet and Ruby Red were next to finish, Whetuhine being a long way back. Rangatahi Likes the Course. The May Hurdle Handicap was another even betting race. Brigadier Bill]

being the elect of backers with £745 10s on his chances, but Ardath carried £697 10s. and Zircon £672 10s in a good pool. Backers of the favourites were robbed of interest in tho race when Brigadier Bill fell at the first obstacle and Ardath crashed at the same fence the next time round. Kalakaua was early to show out, but Gold Peak soon ran into the lead from Kalakaua, Zircon, Comedy Prince, Sottano, Koauau, and Ardath. Kalakiua and Gold Peak jumped the hurdle in front of the stands together, with Sottano, Zircon, Comedy Prince, Koauau and Ardath following in that order, Rangatahi being last. At the five furlongs the Last-named had run into third place behind Kalakaua and Sottano, with Koauau and Comedy Prince following, and when they turned for home Rangatahi was in the lead from Sottano, Koauau and Zircon. Though challenged in the run to the judge Rangatahi won easily by three lengths from Sottano, with Koauau a length and ahalf away. Kalakaua was fourth and Zircon, Comedy Prince and Gold Peak followed in that order. Aucklander Wins Steeplechase. Little River and Peter Maxwell were best backed in the Grandstand Steeplechase but there was only £lOO separting this pair and Fireblight and Omahu on the totalisator. When they passed the stands the first time Lady Spalpeen and Little River were in the lead from Advent, Omahu, Banjuke, Birkenella, Peter Maxwell, Labour Aforn and Tuki, with Crown Coin and Lupineel last. Lady Spalpeen fell at the hencoop entering the straight the second time and Little River led Rayo, Omahu, Peter Maxwell, Banjuke, Tuki, Advent, Crown Coin and Birkenella on the last circuit. At the half mile Little River, Rayo. Peter (Maxwell and Omahu were racing in close order, with Crown Coin following. Peter Maxwell was actually first into the straight from Rayo, Omahu, Little River and Crown Coin, Labour Aforn injuring a stifle coming over the penultimate obstacle and pulling up. In the run to the post Crown Coin made a great effort on the outer and beat all but Peter Maxwell, who was a length and ahalf ahead when the judge was reached. Rayo was a length away, and Omahu, Little River, Lupineel, Tuki, Banjuke, Fireblight, Birkenella, Advent and Lupineel was the order of the remainder. Civility’s Sterling Finish. There was big money for Royal Divorce in the Empire Handicap, the imported horse carrying £lOOl, but Civility was entrusted with £919 10s, there being a drop of £3lB to Alloway. The big field got away to a good start and Day Guard was the first to hit the front, leading past the stands from New Moon, Royal Divorce, Rouex, Shining Armour, Vivo, Civility, Matinee, Income, Diamond Ring, Royal Mint, Ngata, Tresham and Alloway. At the five furlongs Day Guard was three lengths ahead of New Moon, followed by Royal Divorce, Rouex, Civility, Vivo, Afatinee, Shining Armour, Alloway, Income, Tresham and Ngata. The Aucklander was still in front at the entrance to the straight, with Rouex and Vivo next and Civility coming fast, Royal Divorce and Afatinee being at the head of the bunch. Civility had it her own way in the run to the judge and scored decisively from Rouex by a length, with Royal Mint, a length awy, just beating Day Guard for third money on the post. Alloway was fifth and Vivo, Shining Armour, Afatinee, New Afoon, Ngata, Royal Divorce, Tresham, Diamond Bing and Income followed in that order.

One for New Plymouth. Denier was best backed in the Farewell Hack Flat, being entrusted with £666, Green Bonnet and Subdivision being evenly backed at £526 10s and Berinthia carrying £489 10s. Berinthia played up at the barrier, breaking through the tapes a couple of times, and when they were let go Avro and Calculation were left. Aliss Pat* was first to show out from Nastori, Subdivision, Modest Boy, Berinthia. Onward, Break o’ Day and Eka, At the half mile Subdivision had run into the lead from Nastori, followed by Miss 1 Pat, Modest Boy, Eka, and Betrinthia, and he led into the straight from Miss Pat, Eka, Modest Boy, Nastori, Berinthia, Royal Land, Calculation. Break o’ Day, Green Bonnet and Denier. The leader stopped badly in the run home and Nastori, finishing fast on the outer, got home by a length from Berinthia, with Modest Boy, , third, a head and Subdivision a

head further back. Avro was fifth and Green Bonnet, Onward, Break o’ Day, Miss Pat and Joy Germ was the order of the rest. Taranaki Completes a Double. When the totalisator closed for investments on the Borough Handicap Tukia had been installed favourite, being entrusted with £lOl4, which was £lOO more than Bonogne carried. Oration (£909 10s) and Grand Knight (£720) were next best backed. The field got away to a good start, Oration streaking to the front and being the early leader from Lady Cavendish, Tip Tree, Tukia, Papaponga, Deluge, Grand Knight, Miss Hupana, Bevis and Bonognc. Reed steadied his mount, however, and Lady Cavendish was allowed to show the way at the half-mile. Oration lying second, followed by Papaponga, Tukia, Tip Tree, Deluge, and Bevis, with Grand Knight last. Lady Cavendish was the pilot into the straight, while the order of the others was practically unchanged except that Grand Knight had worked his way into sixth position. Once they straightened up for the run to the judge Oration took command again and held off Grand Knight’s determined challenge to win by a length, with Bonogne a neck away. Lady Cavendish was fourth and Bevis, Deluge, Miss Hupana, Tukia, Tip Tree and Papaponga followed in that order. FULL DETAILS. Balgownie Hack Handicap.
