ADVANCES TO SETTLERS APPF.AT. TO THE GOVERNMENT [Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON NORTH, May 19. The Provincial Executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union, in conference to-day, passed the following resolution:— That in view of the fact that farmers’ finance is the most serious problem facing producers to-day, this meeting strongly urges the Government to place the Advances to Settlers Department and the Rural Advances Board in a position sufficiently strong to be a real help to the farmers. It was also decided to join with the Farmers’ Union in a deputation to the Government to protest against the increased bank rate.
• OTHER MATTERS BANK RATE AND ARBITRATION COURT. SOUTH TABANAKI GATHERING. [Per Press Association.] HAWERA, May 19. The annual conlcrence of the South Taranaki Provincial Farmers’ Union commenced here to-day. Among remits, carried a number with the Arbitration Court, advocating the deletion of preference to Unionists, the right of representation iof a third party, and the taking of a secret ballot of all workers concerned before a strike takes pile?. Other remits carried included: That more centralised control of schools be opposed by the Farmers’ Union; that jibe New Zealand banks should allow amounts to bo credited to customers’ current accounts; that the . Government be requested to exempt from income tax any income derived ifrom money loaned on rural security at ' a rate not exceeding five and a-half iper cent. I The conference protested against the increase : n the bank rate, considering 'the time inopportune for such a move.
