HAWKE’S BAY “LEPPER” WINS

MAUNGA’S NARROW VICTORY

Bonny Rill Makes Bold Bid —Century Hurdles to Zircon —Benanee and Benzora take Connolly and Borough Double—FAie Cross-Country Contests. (By “KESTREL.”) The opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's winter meeting yesterday was marked by excellent jumping in the cross-country races and interesting finishes in the events on the flat. The Wanganui Steeplechase was won by the Hawke’s Bay-owned and trained Maunga, and the Century Hurdle Bace resulted in a fine duel between Zircon and Ardath. with victory going to the -former. Bennanee credited Hawke’s Bay with another win in the Connolly

Handicap and Benzora scored convincingly in the Borough Handicap. The other events on the card provided interesting contests.

STEEPLECHASE DAY DOWNFALL OF FAVOURITES DESCRIPTION Of THE RACING. There were some good showers on Wednesday night and early yesterday, but the day was fine though cold, and there was a good attendance, among the guests being the Governor General, Sir Charles Fergusson. The track was in its usual excellent condition, and stood up to the racing well. That it was not so dead as might be expected was proved by the fact that the concluding event, the open sprint, was run in good time, and the time r« corded in the Wanganui Steeplechase was within six seconds of the record for the race, established by Daylight Bill in 1915. Some interesting racing was provid •d. especially in the two events de ■ided over the big timber, and the Century Hurdle Race also provided quota of thrills. Exceptionally good fields contested the handicap events on the flat and the day’s sport promises well fur the concluding day of the meeting to-morrow. There were several falls in the crossountry events. Peter Rosa fell in the Wanganui Steeplechase and injured a shoulder so badly that he had to be destroyed. Comical also fell in this ••vent and Hallowmorn injured a fetlock. In the Hack Steeplechase Lady Spalpeen, the favourite, fell and Advent lost her rider, while Gold Ginks tried to jump the wing of one of the fences and had a fall. Officiating at the starting barrier, Mr C. O’Connor as usual got his fields tway in good style, though he had some unruly ones to deal with. The handicapper was Mr H. Coyle, who had the pleasure of providing the judge with some good finishes to decide upon and found Mr W. P. Russell equal to the occasion, the numbers being hoisted with a promptness that was pleasing. A capable clerical staff, under the direction of Mr W. Hall and his capable lieutenant, Mr D. Robbins, carried out the necessary duties with smoothness despatch. A splendid programme of music, much appreciated by racegoers, was provided by the Queen Alexandra Band under the baton of Captain G. Buckley. It was quite to be expected, in view of the downward trend of totahsator investments of late, that a substantial decrease would be registered during the day. However the club have the satisfaction of recording the compartivt-ly small decline of £3llO, the total for the dav being £23.325, as against the £26.435 registered last year. A description of the racing and full details of the fields follow: — Partaga Takes the First. Miss Pat was the sole defection from the Purua Hack Flat Handicap, with which event proceedings commenced, and of the twenty starters Green Bonnet was the elect of the backers, carrying £514 10s, Berinthia and Modest Boy being next best backed. The big field got away to a good start, save that Berinthia and Calculation were slow to move, the former being badly left. When the field had settled down Denier was in the lead from Nastoria, Joy Germ, Subdivision, Partaga, Monsogne, Modest Boy, Green Bonnet and Onward. At the half Denier was still in the lead from Subdivision, Joy Germ, with Nastori, Partaga and Modest Boy at the head of the rest. Denier was still in the lead as they swung round the bend, and entered the straight just ahead of .Subdivision and Toapaiti, with Partaga coming fast, followed by Joy Germ, Green Bonnet and Modest Boy. In the run to the judge Partaga challenged the leader and wore him down to win by a neck. Nastori was a length and a half away, third, followed by Subdivision, Green Bonnet, Onward, Break o’ Day and Berinthia.

Little River Easily. When the field paraded for the Hack I Steeplechase Peter Rosa. Eon mark, Gil- | gai and Rangisarto were missing, and j Lady Spalpeen was made favourite, carrying £79 more than Little River and Ban juke. They raced in a bunch to the first fence, at which some crowding took place and the order as they jumped was Little River, Labour Morn, Ban juke. Gold Ginks, Lady Spalpeen, Impineel, Rayo and Crown Coin. Advent losing her rider. There was not much change in the positions as they came up the straight the first time, save that the favourite ran into second place, and as they passed the stands Little River led Lady Spalpeen, Labour Morn, Banjuke, Gold Ginks, Crown Coin, Lupineel and Rayo. Going down the back stretch Lady Spalpeen fell at the five furlongs and the field was -trung out in the following order:

Little River, Labour Morn Banjuke, Gold Ginks, Crown Coin and Lupineel. Gold Jinks blundered into the wing of the penultinate obstacle, and Little River came over the hencoop clear of Labour Morn and Banjuke, Crown Coin, Lupineel and Rayo following at intervals. The leader was not troubled over the concluding stages to win by eight lengths, with Banjuke six lengths away, third, and Crown Coin fourth another eight lengths away. Lupineel and Rayo were a long way back. Fine Finish in Big Race. All the acceptors were saddled up for the Wanganui Steeplechase and Comical carried the confidence of investors, £26 better backed than Peter Rosa, Passin’ Through and Gilgai also having friends. A big surprise was in store, however, for two outsiders fought out a fine finish. Omahu and Gilgai were placed behind the field when they lined up at the barrier, and after a good start they ran into the back stretch in the following order: Peter Maxwell, Comical, Bonny Rill, Gilgai, Birkenella. Passin’ Through. Peter Rosa, Omahu. Hallowmorn, Tuki and Maunga. Comical made a bad jump at the obstacle before coming to the straight the first time but led past the stands from Gilgai, Peter Maxwell, Bonny Rill. Peter Rosa, Passin ’ Through, Omahu, Hallowuiorn, Maunga, Birkenella and Tuki. At the fence near the five furlongs Peter Rosa threw his rider heavily and there was little change until they passed the stands the second time, when Bonny Rill, Maunga aud Gilgai were in front of Passin’ Through, Omahu, Comical, Peter Maxwell, Tuki and Birkenella, Hallowrnorn pulling up after injuring a fetlock at the hencoop. Comical fell at the fence that brought down Peter Rosa and at the half-mile Bonny Rill was just in front of Maunga with Gilgai next and Passin’ Through, Omahu, Peter Maxwell and Tuki in that order. As they came over the hencoop Maunga headed Bonny Rill when the latter made a faulty jump, and a thrilling finish resulted in Maunga getting home half a length in front of Bonny Rill, with Gilgai eight lengths away. Omahu was fourth and at intervals came Passin’ Through, Tuki aud Peter Maxwell, with Birkenella a furlong back. Easy for Troilus. A fine field of fourteen contested the IQiitoke Hack Hurdles, in which the form of Troilus at Hawera caused the Bisogne gelding to be sent out favourite. but only £37 better backed than ►San Pedro, there also being money for Mount Marta, Gauntlet and Enare. Troilus, Enare, Lady Acre, Attractive and Peshwa was the order when they had settled down but when the field passed up and out of the straight Lady Acre was in the van, followed by Enare, Peshwa, Mount Marta, Troilus, Attractive. San Pedro, Just John, and Asleep. Whetuhine’s rider lost an iron and pulled up. Down the back Peshwa ran into the lead from Enare, with Lady Acre and Troilus improving their positions ahead of Mount Marta, San Pedro, Attractive and Asleep. Peshwa and Enare came over the last fence together. with Troilus and San PedrD just behind them, and Mount Marta next, but in the run home Troilus came ou the scene to beat Enare by a length. Peshwa was three-quarters of a length away, followed by San Pedro, Mount Marta. Lady Acre. Polyphemus, Asleep, and Just John, with Attractive last, Tamakana having fallen at the back of the course.

Zircon Well in Form. The course scratchings for the Century Hurdles were Euchre and Elvaette and of the nine starters the public went strongly for Nukumai, who carried £227 10s more than Koauau (£635 10s) and Day Bell (£622 10s), with Zircon (£414) best backed of the others. Ardath and Day Bell were quickest into their stride but when they passed the stands the order was Comedy Prince, Day Bell, Zircon, Ardath, Rangatahi, Koauau, I Kalakaua, Nukumai and Sottano. Down the hack Zircon had taken the I lead, Ardath, Day Bell and Comedy

| Prince following, with Nukumai at the i tail of the field. Zircon was still in I front when setting off on the final cirj cuit, but the field had closed up and i Day Bell, Rangatahi, Sottano, A'rdath. Koauau, Comedy Prince, Kalakaua and Nukumai, with only half a dozen lengths between the leaders and the tail of the field. Nukumai made a determined forward move as they swung into the back stretch and half a mile from home ran into third position just behind Zircon and Ardath, with Koauau and Sottano following him. This was the order at the last fence and the favourite could make no impression on the leaders in the final stages, Zircon holding his own to win easily by a length from Ardath. Nukumai was a couple of lengths away, and next to finish were Sottano, Koauau, Kalakaua, Day Bell, Comedy Prince and Rangatahi.

Anoither HawKe s uay winner. The good field of fifteen paraded for | the Connolly Handicap, in which Ora- | zone was supported to the extent of £507, while Royal Divorce carried £5OO 10s and Civility £453 10s. Bennanee was fourth choice at a drop of £l5O. They got away to a good start from the new milo and a-quarter barrier, Vivo dwelling as the tapes went up. Dayguard took the lead coming up the straight the first time from Bennanee, Royal Divorce. Civility. Tresham, Shining Armour, Oration, Diamond Ring, Vivo, Income, Royal Mint, Rouex and Avola, with Dcgage and Alloway last. At the live furlong post Bennanee had headed Day Guard, while Royal Divorce Tresham, Civility, Shining Armour and Oration were next. Day Guard dropped back as they swung into the home stretch, leaving Bennanee to straighten up ahead of Royal Divorce, Civility and Tresham, and leader stayed on to win by a length from Royal Divorce. Tresham was a length and a half away, third, and Oration, Alloway, Dogage, Shining Armour, Rouex, Royal Mint, Diamond Ring, Day Guard, Civility, Vivo, and Income followed them home in that order, Avola being a long way back. Benzora Takes the Last. Grand Knight was sorted out as the right one for the Borough Handicap, the concluding event on the programme, carrying £767, nearly £2OO more than Benzora and Lady Cavendish, while there was a big drop to Oration. Bevis was left when the tapes went up and Lady Cavendish was first to show out from Tukia, Benzora, Oration, Grand j Knight. Bonogne and Papaponga. The i half-sister to Reremoana stil] held the ! lead when heads were turned for home, I but Tukia w'as right alongside and Dej luge, Oration, Benzora, Miss Hupana, Bonogne, Papaponga and Grand Knight were also in the firing line. Lady Cavendish compounded at the distance and Tukia and Benzora took the lead, the (latter doing best to reach the judge j half a length ahead of the Fordell mare, i Bonogne was third, half a length away, ■ and Oration, Lady Cavendish, Deluge, Grand Knight, Miss Hupana. Matinee and Papaponga finished in that order. FULL DETAILS Purua Hack Flat Handicap. (Of 175 sovs; six furlongs.) 5 PARTAGA (Mr. S. C. Tonks) b.g. by Bisogne—Marsuma, 4yrs. 8.13, B. H. WEIGHTS FOR WINTER MEETING. [Per Press Association.] CHBISTCHURCH, May 19.

THE GREAT NORTHERNS

SCRATCHINGS FOR HURDLES. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 19. Desert Glow and Mia Bella were scratched for the Great Northern Hurdles at 9 a.m. THE GRAND NATIONAL SUCCESS OF SPRIG. FAVOURITE'S GALLANT VICTORY. (Special to “Chronicle.”) LONDON, March 31. The Grand National success of Sprig i (writes “Centaur,” the “Chronicle’s” racing correspondent), would come as no surprise to those who have read my I previous notes. It was a gallant victory and gained in admirable style. Honours went to the winner, and to ’ Bright’s Boy, who finished third under 12.7, and it is very obvious that in no forthcoming race can we underestimate the capabilities of thia good ’chaser. The surprise performance of the race % was the forward running of the oneeyed Northern horse, Bovril 111., who split the first and second, and, but for a bad mistake at the last fence in the hands of his weakening amateur rider, Mr. Pennington would most probably have won. At any rate, had a jockey like Anthony been in the saddle, it is safe to assume Bovril HI. would hiv,c won “ten minutes,” and I am sure, that his value was increased ten-fold as the result of his display. All the world will be looking out for Bovril HI. next year, and noting whether his young owner will give way to a professional at Liverpool. That period, however, is far beyond our ken now, so we will turn to matters nearer at hand, and see if we can “find” anything good at Epsom. { The officials responsible for the Sur- ; rcy fixture have made it known that j the meeting will go through, no matter whether the stands are complete j or not. This assurance gratified those; who were inclined to doubt the possiI bility of carrying the meeting through. | ■ Principal among the events to be deI cided at Epsom arc the Groat Metro- • politan Handicap and the City aud Su- : burban. Excellent entries have been secured for both races, and it is easy to anticipate splendid contests. Weisrdorn, Iho German horse, ran exceedingly well in the Lincolnshire, and heads the “City and Sub.” weights. There are, however, many good horses

in the race, and it will be no easy matter to find the winner. Bulger, a lo-cally-trained horse, is freely spoken of in connection with the race, but he is to have a preliminary outing in a small race, and until then the question of his big handicap engagements remains in abeyance. He is also entered in the “Jubilee” at Kempton Park in May.

Looking at the “City” as it now stands, 1 opine that Artist Glow is one of the nicely treated horses. He ran well behind Schiavoni—who, as 1 anticipated, woe the Liverpool Cup after getting badly messed about, and there is no doubt he will, if saved for Epsom, develop into a most genuinely fancied candidate. His make and shape are good, and, search the weights as I can, there is no getting away from the bright preliminary prospects of Artist Glow. A Rogues’ Course.

The Great Metropolitan is a long-dis-tance affair—2| miles. All sorts of things happen on the Epsom course, and the luck of running rules the issue quite a deal. Hidennis, one of the top weights, has been earmarked for this race ever since he won the Chester Cup last May, but to my way of thinking the handicapper has not been kind, and Hidennis will want all the good luck going to carry 8.11 to success on the Epsom switchboard. Dakota, Try Try Again, Pcntland, and are not badly treated candidates, and the latter, who is owned by Lord Rosebery, is being specially trained for the race. St. Mary’s Kirk is most leniently treated on some of his form, and ho ran like a horse returning to form at Leicester recently. He is an ungenerous sort, however, and all that can be said in his favour really is that he will be performing on a 4 ‘rogues’ course.” It is a long time in advance to try and make the vital selection, but one must take the risk, and go for Spartacus for win and place. At any rate, we know the famous primrose jacket always gives a fine run on this particular course.

I will deal with the 11 Jubilee” later on. Foliation seems to have been kindly treated by the weight compiler, and I shall watch her interim progress with great interest. Bayford, according to news from the stable, is doing remarkably well, and this race may be his objective, of course. Embargo, who was withdrawn from the Lincolnshire, is another well-treated candidate for the big Kempton race, and this may be another one we shall need to reckon with on the day of running. Sickle, please observe, was by no means disgraced when failing to concede 201bs. to Buckfast in heavy mud at Liverpool. Ho will still win a classic if good enough, and by the time of the Guineas and Derby will be as big a horse as Colorado was when doing so well in those races. J. Collins, wellknown in India and Egypt, is shaping well and riding first jockey to Capt. J. J. Caldicott. who did pretty well in Egyp? after the war. At small meeting,•*. the pair should continue to do well.
