PARLIAMENTARY JEST

MALTA TRANSFERRED FROM AFRICA Malta, whither an Empire Parliamentary delegation is going this month, underwent, a geographical as well as a political change when it became British, a century and a quarter ago. • Previously the island had been regarded as part of Africa, but when the tioops stationed? there claimed the extra pay due for employment out of Europe, Parliament decreed that for military purposes Malta should be reckoned as in Europe.

The jest at the time was that Malta had been made European by Act of Parliament, but the jest became a reality. for the island has ever since been classed in Europe by geographers.
