IS IT TRUE?
ENGLAND AMERICANISED SINCLAIR LEWIS’ ASSERTION. There are, it appears, two sides to Sinclair Lewis’ recent assertion that England has completely succumbed to America. A London correspondent writes to The Manchester Guardian concerning the American novelist am] his recent return to Anglo-Saxon haunts: “His energy is reported to be as great as ever, and his English friends are going into training so as to keep up with him vocally and in allegro movements round the luncheon table. “He is reported to have found Eng land given over to American slang, chiefly as the result .of cinema captions. There is sure to be something in this, for Mr Lewis is, of course, a real observer; but I think that it does not go much further than that many Englishmen in sp< Iking to an American think it more friendly to use all the American phrasqs they know. “Mr Lewis thinks that the English people are. as loquacious as any, and told me that it was impossible to get peace and quiet in a railway carriage because all the Englishmen wanted to talk to you. I don’t womdjer that people should want to talk to anyone , who looks so interesting and perceptive las Mr Lewis, but I can’t understand ’Mr Lewis’ allowing them a chance to I get a word in.” Where Else? Mother: “Why arc you rolling the dustbin about, Billy?” Billy: “Amusing baby, ma.” Mother: “But where is baby?” Billy: “Inside the dustbin.”
