MOTHER’S BIRTHDAY PRESENTS

My Dear Children, Mother is sure to like a laundry bag for a birthday present, and you can make a very nice one out of a yard and a quarter of coloured casement cloth. Fold the stuff in half, and sow up the sides to within about ten inches of the top. Next make two-inch wide hems along both top edges, so that you can slip a cane through each casing, as explained in the little diagram; this makes a far handier bag than the ordinary drawn-up-round-the-top kind, because it’s much easier to put clothes in and take thorn out when the opening is kept rigid by means of the canes by which to hang the bag behind tho door; make them about a yard long.

A pretty way of trimming the bag is to applique a gay motif on the front. A spray of flowers cut from cretonne would be nice or, if you prefer a more original decoration, how would you like to sew on a quaint little washerwoman, hanging out the clothes, as suggested in the drawing? Draw the shape- and cut it out in paper first; and when you’ve got it to your satisfaction, cut it out in a scrap of contrasting material. Hands, feet and so on. can be shown with embroidery; and the “washing” should be cut from white material stitched on with black thread. Black can also suggest the clothes-line and pegs. A few daisies and grasses at the washerwoman’s feet will add a finishing touch When working anything of this kind, it would be well to do it before sewing up the sides of the bag—you will find things easier to handle so.
