PARALYSIS IN PIGS

HOW TO COMBAT IT. Amongst pigs in some localities in the Dominion paralysis is a fairly common occurrence. This is noticed especially amongst young pigs. This illness usually affects the hind legs, but sometimes the front legs also. It is said that inbreeding is the cause in some cases. This, of course, can be eliminated by culling and out crossing. Tuberculosis may be the cause in some cases, anil also parasitic invasion. Usually the symptoms noticed, are that the animals are stiff in their movements, are staggory in their gait and occasionally fall to the ground. Very often they arc found sitting on their haunches and are unable to rise. Young pigs are often attacked shortly after weaning. The muscles of the affected parts become tense and hard after the attacks have continued for some time.

The best way to combat the disease is to manage your piggery on correct lines. Avoid inbreeding, and select your breeding sires from good stock. Housing is an important item, and location and drainage should he considered. The houses should be free from dampness and there should be good ventilation without draughts. Pigs should be kept dry and warm, and allowed plenty of exercise. All utensils should be kept thoroughly clean as well as the food given. Better housing, a study of hygiene and practical economic feeding will go a long way towards combating this and other diseases.
