MAORI LANDS

A MASS OF EVIDENCE WORK OF CONFISCATION COMMISSION [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 13. The Confiscated Lands Commission concluded its sittings this morning, and the Commission will now proceed to examine the mass of evidence before it preparatory to framing a recommendation to Parliament. It was announced that many fresh petitions had come to hand in which claims were advanced regarding burial places and fishing reserves, but his Honour observed that inquiry into those matters would be useless as ho could not sec what relief could be given. The places could not be restored to the natives. Counsel appearing for some of the petitioners raised a laugh by announcing that one of the sacred places referred to was now a racecourse.
