A FINE PICTURE

SYDNEY THOMPSON’S WORK OPPORTUNITY FOR WANGANUI Air Louis Cohen writes the “Chronicle” with reference to an effort to purchase for the Sarjeant Art Gallery a picture by Sydney Thompson, a New Zealand-born artist who has already achieved national fame. The picture in question, “Sunny Market at Concarneau,” is at present among a fine collection on exhibition by Mr McCormick, art-dealer, of Christchurch, at Air J. Coull’s auction rooms. Its sale price is SO guineas, but as a special concession for the Sarjjeant Gallery alone, Air McCormick is willing to accept £GS for the picture, and Air Coull is generously foregoing his commission to enable this to be done. Air Cohen, in pointing out this exceptional chance to obtain such a fine example of Sydney Thompson’s work, mentions that every gallery in New Zealand except that at AVanganui, and also the galleries of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide have pictures by

him on their walls. Last year his sales at an exhibition in Wellington realised £BOO and in Christchurch £9OO, while in Sydney they amounted to £3OOO. Referring to the proposal to purchase “Sunny Market Day at Concarneau,” for the Sarjeant Gallery, Air Cohen says:—“l cordially ask the citizens of Wanganui to contribute to a fund for purchasing this beautiful picture, which would be one of the outstanding possessions of the gallery. Subscriptions may be paid either at the office of this paper, to the Town Clerk, the custodian o fthe Gallery, or to myself. As this offer of Ali McCormick is available for only a* few days, immediate response to this project is essential. Citizens please show a practical interest iA our Gallery, the one institution in our city that is giving it distinction amongst the cties of New Zealand! Subscriptions will be publicly acknowledged.”
