TWO CENTURIES NEW ZEALAND BATS FIERCE HITTING A FEATURE GOOD FIRST INNINGS LEAD AGAINST M.C.C. The New Zealand team has attracted much attention in the match against M.C.C. at Lords. The fine total of 462 was compiled in reply to the home team’s 392, fierce hitting being the outstanding feature of the innings. Dacre and Lowry were responsible for a century each and McGirr, Blunt and Merritt also batted well. The progress of the match will bie watched with interest by Dominion enthusiasts. LONDON, May 12. Fierce hitting marked the New Zealanders’ innings against Marylebone. Dacre got four boundaries in a single over and split his bat into four pieces in attempting a fifth. He and Lowry hit forty-three off three overs. Lowry’s century occupied eighty-five minutes. After a promising start with the score at one time no wickets for 70, by noon it had become 4 for 107, Blunt, Page, Mills and Dempster all going in quick succession. The first named again played a capital innings but Alien’s fast bowling was too much for some of the others. James and Dacre, however, stopped the rot. The. latter set about the bowling as if he had been in all day. He hit his first ball for four and followed it with two more boundaries in Calthorpe’s next over, and scored 28 in ten minutes, with such vigour that he split his bat. Fast Scoring. James got his leg in front of the fast bowler after adding a useful 33, but Lowry proved a capable partner for the Aucklander and at lunch tho total was 5 for 226. The game had taken a decided turn, 126 at one stage being added in 70 minutes. Dacre, who has become the public’s idol, continued to smash the bowling till he lifted one to deep mid-off. He made his 107 in an hour and a half, hitting 20 boundaries. The partnership produced 115 in 59 minutes. McGirr and his captain also made a fine stand ,thc former emulating Dacre and batting in dashing style for an unfinished 58. An Attractive Century. Lowry was always attractive and was in for 1$ hours for his century, which included fifteen fours. Merritt also helped McGirr to materially increase the score to the fine total of 460. Allen, the fast bowler, came out with the best analysis. ’ M.C.C. went in again and had scored 96 without loss when stumps were drawn. Scores were: —■ New Zealand. First Innings. Dacre Another Trumpet? Colonel Phillips Trevor, writing in the Daily Telegraph, says: “Trumpet has been dead many years but Dacre’s display, with one exception was the most brilliant an ove.seas ’batsman has given since Trumpet .djelighted us. “Though we have yet to see New Zealand bat on a slow, sticky wicket,” he continues, ‘ • their batting reputation is unquestionably established.” CONGRATULATIONS MESSAGE FROM M.C.C. “CRITICS ARE COMPLIMENTARY,” SAI’S MANAGER [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. Tho secretary of the New Zealand Crickdt Association has received the following cablegram from London:— “Marylebone Cricket Club heartily reciprocates your greeting. It is a real pleasure to us to entertain the team and to help in every possible way. We realise that you rejoice with us that cricket is doing so much to cement the comradeship of England and the Dominions.” The following telegram has been received by New Zealand Cricket Ltd. from Mr D. Hay, manager of the New Zealand team. “460! A wonderful day. Blunt, Mills, Page and ‘Dempster went early in a bunch. Dacre followed and opened with five consecutive fours. James 33. With Dacre’s valuable score, the Dacre-Lowry and Lowry-McGirr were the great partnerships. A feature of tho day was the forceful batting. Critics arc very complimentary and the crowd was obviously pleased. Hope to have Alcott in action in a month.”
