THE LEVEL CROSSING

TACKLING THE MENACE WORK BY HIGHWAYS BOARD. The menace of the level crossing is being tackled with determination by the Main Highways Board, members of which were in Wanganui last evening, and left for Taranaki this morning. Speaking to a “Chronicle” man, the secretary of the Board, Mr. W. A. Sutherland, said that in the work of elimination the Board has asked local bodies to contribute to the extent which they consider represents their interest in the undertaking. In this connection practically all the local bodies have responded admirably.

For the elimination of, the Porirua crossing, the Makara County Council has offered a contribution of £lOOO, while in the case of the Turakina crossing the Rangitikei County Council has made a substantial donation.

To-day the Board will interview members of the Hawera County Council, that body having declined,in accordance with a resolution of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association, to make a contribution to the proposed work for the elimination of the South Road level crossing on the town boundary of Hawera.
