THIEF AT CHURCH
AUCKLAND INCIDENT WORSHIPPERS’ HANDBAGS RIFLED. (Special to “Chronicle ,f ) AUCKLAND, May 2. Upstairs in church the choir sang a beautiful anthem. Downstairs the “artful dodger,” apparently considering that the singers were rich enough in possession of such golden voices, helped himself from their handbags. It was during .evensong at St. Paul’a Anglican Church last evening that a thief entered the hall by a door inidvertenily left open and, locating ’he ladies’ vestry, removed several handbags containing about £4 10s in ash. A member of the congregation stated that while the service was in progress he heard a noise in the hall below as ol someone blundering against a chair, but he gave the matter little thought la sounds from beneath were often caused by an authorised person engaged in church work.
This particular church has been tho scene of several robberies, but in each case those responsible were apprehended by the police and have paid according to the extent of the offmee.
