THE SPANISH THRONE

CHOICE OF AN HEIR KING’S ELDEST SONS SET ASIDE (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, May 1. The Daily Express’ special correspondent, after a visit to Spain telegraphs from Gibraltar: * ‘ Though for reasons of State no announcement will at the present be made in the Spanish Press, King Alfonso and General De Rivera have decided that King Alfonso’s third son, Juan Carlos, now 14 years of age, shall succeed to the throne. The first two sons will abdicate, as there is no hope of the health of either permitting succession.” The correspondent adds: “At present there is no more talk of convoking Parliament, but Spain is perfectly calm and peaceful, though personal liberty is suppressed. No doubt the country is settling down to an era of prosperity.”
