ADMIRALTY CONTROL
CHANGE IN JULY EARL BEATTY’S RETIREMENT (By Radio) RUGBY, May 1. In connection with the retirement of Earl Beatty from the post of First Sea Lord on June 30, and the appointment of Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Charles Madden to succeed him, it is pointed out that Earl Beatty was due to retire last November, but under pressure consented to defer his resignation. On the dispersal of the Grand Fleet, of which he was Commander-in-Chief, Earl Beatty took up his present duties and his period of office at the Admiralty has been marked by a reduction of the navy to a peace footing after the grQatest war in history. It is generally agreed that this has been accomplished with a minimum of hardship and dislocation.
