FOOTBALL [ From the " Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] The first matches of the season under the auspices of the Ruapehu Rugby Sub-Union were played on Saturday, when the Charity Cup knock-out competitions were commenced. The weather was cold and showery, and the attendances were small. In the senior division Raetihi defeated United on the Raetihi showgrounds by 16 to 14, and Junction defeated Athletic at Ohakune by 17 to nil. In the junior matches Junction registered a win over Athletic by 9 to 6. and Raetihi was given the decision over Ohakune, after extra time had been played to decide, by a force down, the scores being 6 points each. The thirds’ games resulted in easy victories for Athletic and United against High School and Ohakune by 17 to nil and 13 to 5 respectively. METHODIST CHURCH In Ashwell’s Hall on Friday evening, a farewell was tendered to Mr T. N. A. Martin, who for the past three | years has been assistant-teacher at the . I local school and who has received ani other appointment, by members of the I Methodist Church. Combined with this function, a welcome was given to the new minister, the Rev. I. M. Raynor, who with take charge of the Rae-tihi-Ohakune circuit. Mr T. H. Lucas presided, and in a brief ad.dress expressed regret at the departure of Mr Martin, who had carried out the duties as organist at the church, and also as teacher of the Sunday school for a long period, and on behalf of members presented him with a substantial monetary donation as a parting gift. The. speaker then formally welcomed the new minister on behalf of the church, and trusted that his sojourn in Raetihi would be a pleasant one. Other speakers voiced the sentiment of the chairman, and both Mr Martin and Rev. Raynor appropriately replied. CROQUET CLUB The Croquet Club closed its season on Thursday afternoon. Several games were played and a dainty afternoon tea was dispensed.
