BENCH HAS OTHER VIEW SENTENCE OF TWELVE MONTHS. “I will fix the time!” said Air J. S. Barton, S.M., at the Wanganui Alagistrate’s Court yesterday in reply to Frederick Searle, who, when the police referred to a large list of convictions for drunkenness, compensatingly offered to do six months on “The Island.” And His Worship did fix the time. After hearing the police evidence accused was given a holiday for 12 months. Searle was charged on two counts: the first with a breach of his prohibition order, and the second, with trespass on his wife’s property. Police officers deposed that during the last seven years Searle had been the subject of three prohibition orders and he was now no better than when complaints were first received regarding him. He was an habitaual inebriate and during the last six months no fewer than five convictions had been entered against him. His total convictions for drunkenness amounted to 15. Accused’s drinking habits had also caused trouble in his home. The charge of trespass was dismissed, as no evidence was forthcoming.
